Hugh Carless
Hugh Michael Carless CMG (22 April 1925 – 20 December 2011) was a British diplomat, philanthropist and explorer who served in Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service from 1950 to 1985. He is best known for the exploration of Nuristan and the Panjshir Valley along with his friend Eric Newby, which was the subject of Newby's humorous travel book ''A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush'' (1958). Biography Carless was born on 22 April 1925 in Nainital, British India, to Henry Alfred Carless, CIE, who served as a police officer in the Indian Civil Service (Inspector-General of Police, Ajmer-Merwara and advisor to the Resident of Rajputana) and his wife, Gwendolen Pattullo. He was educated at Sherborne School, Dorset, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) where he spent a year (1942) studying Persian (Farsi), and Trinity Hall, Cambridge where he read History from 1947 until 1950. Ernie Carless
Ernest Francis Carless (9 September 1912 – 26 September 1987) was a Welsh cricketer. Carless was a right-handed batsman who played primarily as a wicketkeeper. He also bowled right-arm off-breaks though he did not bowl in first-class cricket. Carless played football in the Football League for Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle as an inside forward. He was born at Cadoxton, Glamorgan. Carless made his first-class debut for Glamorgan in 1934 against Middlesex, though Tom Brierley kept wicket in this match; he played one further match for the county in that season, against Surrey, when Carless kept wicket. During the Second World War he played for the club in fund-raising matches. Following the end of the war and the resumption of County Cricket in 1946, Carless made his final first-class appearance, 12 years after his previous first-class match, in a Glamorgan side which was beset by injuries and struggling to field a team. Roy "Roi" Carless (October 3, 1920–January 2, 2009) was a Canadian cartoonist. His cartoons were syndicated across Canada and the United States, and he is considered one of Canada's most productive cartoonists. Biography Born in York County, Ontario in 1920, Roy was first published at the age of 14 in the school newspaper at Runnymede Collegiate in Toronto. His father was an athlete and Chief of Police in Swansea, where Roy explored the community between High Park and the Humber River, observing the differences between life as lived and as perceived and recorded. He said his first drawing instruction came from an architectural student who, courting Roy's older sister, needed to keep the youngster occupied with something else. Betty Careless or Betsy Careless (–1739) was a notorious prostitute and later bagnio-owner in 18th-century London. Probably born Elizabeth Carless (though she later used the name Mrs. Elizabeth Biddulph), she adapted her name to better suit her profession. Her name, beauty and reputation made her, like Sally Salisbury before her, something of an archetypal courtesan for the popular culture of the day. Biography She was born around 1704 in London.
