Carle Honors
The Carle Honors are annual awards given by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art to individuals and organizations in the picture book field for their dedication and creative vision. They are named in honor of the American author and illustration of children's picture books Eric Carle. Eric Carle Museum Of Picture Book Art
The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is a museum devoted to the art of the picture book and especially the children's book. It is a member of Museums10 and is adjacent to the campus of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. The Carle was founded by Eric and Barbara Carle, and designed by Juster Pope Frazier Architects. History Together with his wife Barbara (1938-2015), Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic ''The Very Hungry Caterpillar'', founded the museum. It was the first full-scale museum in the United States devoted to national and international picture book art. The Museum's stated goal is to foster connections between visual and verbal literacy and to provide visitors of all ages and backgrounds with the opportunity to explore their own creativity and the confidence to appreciate and enjoy art of every kind. Susan Hirschman
Susan Hirschman was the founder of children's publisher Greenwillow Books. Career Hirschman was born in Manhattan, and lived there for her entire career. She was inspired to enter publishing during high school when she heard a talk by Jennie Lindquist. Her first job was in 1954, working as a secretary at publisher Alfred A. Knopf. She later moved to Sandpiper Press, and from there to Harper & Row, where she worked under Ursula Nordstrom. After taking time off from Harper & Row, she was quickly hired by Macmillan to head their children's book publishing division. She remained there until October 1974, when she resigned in protest of a mass firing. She founded Greenwillow as an imprint of William Morrow (now HarperCollins), where she remained until her retirement in 2001. Lin Oliver
Lin Oliver (born February 2, 1947) is an American writer, producer, and the co-founder (with Steve Mooser) of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. During the 1990s and early 2000s, she wrote and produced a number of works for television and film, notably the 1990s television show, ''Harry and the Hendersons.'' As an author of books for children, Oliver began collaborating on the '' Hank Zipzer'' series with actor Henry Winkler in 2003. They next created the prequel series ''Here's Hank'', the ''Ghost Buddy'' series, and the ''Alien Superstar'' series. David Macaulay
David Macaulay (born 2 December 1946) is a British-born American illustrator and writer. His works include ''Cathedral'' (1973), ''The Way Things Work'' (1988) and ''The New Way Things Work'' (1998). His illustrations have been featured in nonfiction books combining text and illustrations explaining architecture, design and engineering, and he has written a number of children's fiction books. Marianne Carus
Marianne Carus (June 16, 1928 – March 3, 2021) was a German-born American editor and publisher known for creating the children's magazine ''Cricket''. Responding to educators who were using the basic readers created by her and her husband, Carus began outlining a children's literary magazine. She was inspired by ''St. Nicholas'', started in 1873 and edited by Mary Mapes Dodge. Carus was not personally knowledgeable about publishing so she brought together a team of experts to act as her editorial board including Eleanor Cameron, Virginia Haviland, Clifton Fadiman, Lloyd Alexander, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and art director Trina Schart Hyman.
