Carla Tagliente
Carla Tagliente (born January 2, 1979 in Marathon, New York) is a former field hockey striker from the United States, who earned a total number of 78 caps for the Women's National Team, in which she scored five goals. The former student of the University of Maryland, where she played for the Terrapins, scored her first international goal in her first international appearance, versus South Korea (1-0) at the 1997 Champions Trophy in Berlin, Germany. Tagliente retired in April 2003. Marathon, New York
Marathon is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 1,967 at the 2010 census. The town of Marathon contains a village also named Marathon. The town is on the southern border of the county and is in the Southern tier region of New York State and is southeast of Cortland. The Central New York Maple Festival takes place in Marathon annually. History Marathon is within the bounds of the former Central New York Military Tract. The first settlers arrived in 1794. The town was formed from part of the town of Cincinnatus as the "Town of Harrison" in 1818. The name was changed to "Marathon" in 1828 because another town in New York was named Harrison. The present name is after the Battle of Marathon. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad's Syracuse Branch through Marathon opened on October 18, 1854. The 2002 Women's Hockey World Cup was the 10th edition of the Women's Hockey World Cup field hockey tournament. It was held from 24 November to 8 December 2002 in Perth, Western Australia. Argentina won the tournament for the first time after defeating the Netherlands 4–3 in the final on penalty strokes after a 1–1 draw. China won the third place match by defeating defending champions Australia 2–0 to claim their first ever World Cup medal. For this tournament, the participating nations were increased from the standard 12 (as in the 6 previous editions) to 16. The 1999 Pan American Games, officially the XIII Pan American Games or the 13th Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from July 23 to August 8, 1999, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and surrounding towns and cities. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick.
