Carl Wedl
Carl Wedl (14 October 1815 – 21 September 1891) was an Austrian pathologist who was a native of Vienna. In 1841 he obtained his doctorate in Vienna, and subsequently practiced medicine in Ischl and Salzburg. In 1844 he took a scientific journey to France and England, afterwards returning to Vienna, where he performed histological research. With assistance from Karl Rokitansky (1804–1878), he received his habilitation in 1849. In 1853 he became an associate professor, and in 1872 was appointed professor of histology at the University of Vienna. Some of his well-known students were Heinrich Auspitz (1834–1885), Moritz Kaposi (1837–1902) and Salomon Stricker (1834–1898). Wedl is largely remembered for his work in microscopic pathology and histology. He made contributions in the fields of helminthology, neurology and ophthalmology, and was one of the first physicians to apply cell theory to pathology of the eye. Crystalline Lens
The lens, or crystalline lens, is a transparent biconvex structure in the eye that, along with the cornea, helps to refract light to be focused on the retina. By changing shape, it functions to change the focal length of the eye so that it can focus on objects at various distances, thus allowing a sharp real image of the object of interest to be formed on the retina. This adjustment of the lens is known as '' accommodation'' (see also below). Accommodation is similar to the focusing of a photographic camera via movement of its lenses. The lens is flatter on its anterior side than on its posterior side. Trematoda is a class of flatworms known as flukes. They are obligate internal parasites with a complex life cycle requiring at least two hosts. The intermediate host, in which asexual reproduction occurs, is usually a snail. The definitive host, where the flukes sexually reproduce, is a vertebrate. Infection by trematodes can cause disease in all five traditional vertebrate classes: mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. Etymology Trematodes are commonly referred to as flukes. This term can be traced back to the Old English name for flounder, and refers to the flattened, rhomboidal shape of the organisms. Taenia (genus)
''Taenia'' is the type genus of the Taeniidae family of tapeworms (a type of helminth). It includes some important parasites of livestock. Members of the genus are responsible for taeniasis and cysticercosis in humans, which are types of helminthiasis belonging to the group of neglected tropical diseases. More than 100 species are recorded. They are morphologically characterized by a ribbon-like body composed of a series of segments called proglottids; hence the name ''Taenia'' (Greek ταίνια, ''tainia'' meaning ribbon, bandage, or stripe). The anterior end of the body is the scolex. The nematodes ( or grc-gre, Νηματώδη; la, Nematoda) or roundworms constitute the phylum Nematoda (also called Nemathelminthes), with plant-Parasitism, parasitic nematodes also known as eelworms. They are a diverse animal phylum inhabiting a broad range of environments. Bactrian Camel
The Bactrian camel (''Camelus bactrianus''), also known as the Mongolian camel or domestic Bactrian camel, is a large even-toed ungulate native to the steppes of Central Asia. It has two humps on its back, in contrast to the single-humped dromedary. Its population of 2 million exists mainly in the domesticated form. Their name comes from the ancient historical region of Bactria. Domesticated Bactrian camels have served as pack animals in inner Asia since ancient times. With its tolerance for cold, drought, and high altitudes, it enabled the travel of caravans on the Silk Road. Viktor Pietschmann
Viktor Pietschmann (27 October 1881 – 11 November 1956) was an Austrian ichthyologist at the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna Museum of Natural History. He was the curator of the fish collection from 1919 to 1946 and made collecting trips to the Barents Sea, Greenland, Mesopotamia, Armenia, Hawaii, Romania, and Poland. Pietschmann described many new fish, including several species of shark, and had more than 50 publications over his career. He served in the Austrian army in World War I, during which he was stationed in the Ottoman Empire. While there, Pietschmann Witnesses and testimonies of the Armenian genocide, witnessed the Armenian genocide and took many photographs of the deportees. Michele Stossich
Michele Stossich (10 August 1857 – 7 February 1906) was an Italian-Austrian zoologist and helminthologist born in Trieste. He was the son of biologist Adolf Stossich (1824-1900). Stossich studied at the University of Innsbruck and Vienna Polytechnic, earning his teaching certificate in 1878. Afterwards, he was an instructor in Fiume (1878-1882) and Trieste. In 1902 he described Cyclocoelidae, a family of parasitic flatworms. During his career he classified a number of helminthological species, and has several zoological species named after him. Thomas Spencer Cobbold FRS (26 May 182810 March 1886) was an English biologist. Life He was born at Ipswich, the third son of Rev. Richard Cobbold, author of the ''History of Margaret Catchpole''. After graduating in medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1851, he was appointed lecturer on botany at St Mary's Hospital, London in 1857, and also on zoology and comparative anatomy at Middlesex Hospital in 1861. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in June, 1864.
