Carl Ryder
200px, Schooner '' Fylla'' in Copenhagen harbour Carl Hartvig Ryder (12 September 1858 – 3 May 1923) was a Danish naval officer and Arctic explorer. Biography Carl Ryder was born in Copenhagen. He was the son of Frederik Valentiner Ryder (1821-1909) and his wife Henriette Sophie Cathrine Husmann (1836-1896). He entered a military career in the Royal Danish Navy becoming a Second Lieutenant in 1879 and Captain 1897. He led an expedition to the Upernavik Distrikt in 1886-1887 and, most famously, the 1891-1892 expedition to East Greenland by the vessel ''Hekla''. The way north from Ittoqqortoormiit was effectively blocked by ice. Instead, Ryder made the first comprehensive mapping of the entire Scoresby Sund fjord system, except for the inner part of Nordvestfjord. Nuuk
Nuuk (; da, Nuuk, formerly ) is the capital and largest city of Greenland, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2021, it had a population of 18,800. The city was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede when he relocated from the earlier Hope Colony () where he arrived in 1721. The governor Claus Paarss was part of the relocation. The new colony was placed at the Inuit settlement of Nûk and was named ''Godthaab'' ("Good Hope"). Exploration refers to the historical practice of discovering remote lands. It is studied by geographers and historians. Two major eras of exploration occurred in human history: one of convergence, and one of divergence. The first, covering most of ''Homo sapiens'' history, saw humans moving out of Africa, settling in new lands, and developing distinct cultures in relative isolation. Early explorers settled in Europe and Asia; 14,000 years ago, some crossed the Ice Age land bridge from Siberia to Alaska, and moved southbound to settle in the Americas. Ryder Glacier (Greenland)
Ryder Glacier ( da, Ryder Gletscher), is one of the major glaciers in northern Greenland. This glacier was first mapped by Lauge Koch in 1917 during Knud Rasmussen's 1916-1918 Second Thule Expedition to north Greenland and was named after Danish Arctic explorer Carl Ryder. Geography The Ryder Glacier originates in the Greenland Ice Cap. It is roughly north–south oriented and has its terminus at the head of the Sherard Osborn Fjord between Permin Land and Warming Land. HDMS Fylla
HDMS ''Fylla'' was a Danish gunboat, launched in 1862. ''Fylla'' was built entirely in wood, rigged as a topsail schooner and equipped with a steam-driven propeller. The propeller could be raised up into a well when under sail. Original armament was turning cannons placed in the midline of the ship, but later replaced by smaller cannons on each side of the ship. Service ''Fyllas first voyage was to the Danish West Indies in 1863, but she was called back in 1864 because of the second Schleswig war. Theo Holm
Herman Theodor "Theo" Holm (February 3, 1854 - December 26, 1932) was a Danish-American systematic botanist, agriculturalist and plant pathologist. His works dealt principally with plants from the Arctic and from the Rocky Mountains, mainly taxonomy and morphology. He published over 150 papers reflecting his research which included his series ''Studies on the Cyperaceae'' and ''Medicinal Plants of North America''. Biography Herman Theodor Holm was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied botany at the University of Copenhagen under professor Eugenius Warming and graduated 1880. In 1882–1883, he participated in the expedition on board the Danish vessel ''Dijmphna'' (''Dijmphna-expeditionen 1882-83'') to the territory between Russia and the North Pole during the First International Polar Year. Eugenius Warming
Eugenius (died 6 September 394) was a usurper in the Western Roman Empire (392–394) against Emperor Theodosius I. While Christian himself, Eugenius capitalized on the discontent in the West caused by Theodosius' religious policies targeting pagans. He renovated the pagan Temple of Venus and Roma and restored the Altar of Victory, after continued petitions from the Roman Senate. Eugenius replaced Theodosius' administrators with men loyal to him, including pagans. This revived the pagan cause. His army fought the army of Theodosius at the Battle of the Frigidus, where Eugenius was captured and executed.
