Caren (horse)
Caren (foaled April 27, 2013) is a retired Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. A multiple stakes winner at ages two and three, she was named the 2016 Canadian Horse of the Year. She finished her career with a record of 9 wins from 17 starts, and earnings of US$821,790. Background Caren is a bay filly who was bred in Ontario by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt-Meeuse of Shannondoe Farm. She was the first winner from the first crop of foals sired by Society's Chairman, who did not make his racing debut until age five but then became a stakes-winning sprinter. Her dam Jo Zak was unraced but proved a successful broodmare, producing nine winners from twelve runners. Caren was sold as a yearling at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton fall yearling sale for $45,000 to trainer Michael De Paulo. A filly is a female horse that is too young to be called a mare. Woodbine Racetrack
Woodbine Racetrack is a race track for Thoroughbred horse racing in the Etobicoke area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Owned by Woodbine Entertainment Group, Woodbine Racetrack manages and hosts Canada's most famous race, the King's Plate. The track was opened in 1956 with a one-mile oval dirt track, as well as a seven-eights turf course. It has been extensively remodeled since 1993, and since 1994 has had three racecourses. Sadler's Wells (horse)
Sadler's Wells (11 April 1981 – 26 April 2011) was an American-bred, Irish-trained champion Thoroughbred racehorse and outstanding sire. He was the 1984 European Champion miler after winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes and Phoenix Champion Stakes in that year. He also finished second in the French Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Despite his success as a runner, it is as a sire that Sadler's Wells is best known. He was the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland a record-setting 14 times, including 13 titles in a row. At the time of his death, he had sired 323 stakes winners. Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs is a horse racing complex located on Central Avenue in south Louisville, Kentucky, United States, famed for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby. It officially opened in 1875 and was named for Samuel Churchill, whose family was prominent in Kentucky for many years. The term carotene (also carotin, from the Latin ''carota'', "carrot") is used for many related unsaturated hydrocarbon substances having the formula C40Hx, which are synthesized by plants but in general cannot be made by animals (with the exception of some aphids and spider mites which acquired the synthesizing genes from fungi). Carotenes are photosynthetic pigments important for photosynthesis. Carotenes contain no oxygen atoms. They absorb ultraviolet, violet, and blue light and scatter orange or red light, and (in low concentrations) yellow light. Carotenes are responsible for the orange colour of the carrot, after which this class of chemicals is named, and for the colours of many other fruits, vegetables and fungi (for example, sweet potatoes, chanterelle and orange cantaloupe melon). Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. The original purpose of grading was to identify the most competitive races, which helps horsemen make comparisons of the relative quality of bloodstock for breeding and sales purposes. Held during the third week of May, the Grade III event is open to three-year-old fillies. Raced over a distance of miles on Polytrack synthetic dirt, it currently offers a current purse of $122,145. Lady Angela Stakes
The Lady Angela Stakes is a thoroughbred horse race run annually during the third week of May at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada. An Ontario Sire Stakes, it is a restricted race for three-year-old fillies contested over a distance of seven furlongs on Polytrack synthetic dirt. Inaugurated in 1982 at Greenwood Raceway, it was raced at a distance of six and one half furlongs in its first year but in 1983 was modified to its present seven furlongs. The event was moved to the Woodbine track in 1984. The race is named for the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame mare, Lady Angela.
