René De Birague
René de Birague (original name: Renato Birago; 2 February 1506 – 24 November 1583) was an Italian patrician who became a French cardinal and chancellor. Biography Born at Milan, he was the son of Giangiacomo Galeazzo Birago, ambassador of the duke of Milan in France, and Anna Trivulzio. Sent to papal Avignon, he cut his studies short to take up family duties at the unexpected death of his father. As a doctor of law he was admitted to the ''Collegio d'avvocati'' of Milan in 1536. After the battle of Pavia (1525), when the French and their sympathizers were expelled from Milan, he and his three brothers, Louis, Pierre and Charles, escaped to France to avoid the vengeance of Francesco II Sforza, duke of Milan. Declared a traitor by the Spanish government in Milan, his properties were confiscated in 1536 (they were partially restored in 1556). Pope Gregory XIV ( la, Gregorius XIV; it, Gregorio XIV; 11 February 1535 – 16 October 1591), born Niccolò Sfondrato or Sfondrati, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 5 December 1590 to his death in October 1591. Early career Niccolò Sfondrati was born at Somma Lombardo, then part of the Duchy of Milan, in the highest stratum of Milanese society. His mother, of the house of Visconti, died in childbirth. His father Francesco Sfondrati, a senator of the ancient comune of Milan, was created Cardinal-Priest by Pope Paul III in 1544. In his youth he was known for his modest lifestyle and stringent piety. Giulio Canani
Giulio Canani (1524 – 27 November 1592) was an Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Early life Born in Ferrara to Luigi Canani and Lucrezia Brancaleone, he studied both canon and civil law in the University of Ferrara and he became cleric in Ferara. Later he went to Rome and in 1552 he was appointed papal datary by Pope Julius III. Episcopate He was elected bishop of Adria on November 26, 1554. Cardinalate Giulio Canani was nominated for the cardinalate by Duke Alfonso d'Este of Ferrara. Michele Della Torre (1511–1586) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. A member of the Della Torre family, Michele Della Torre was born in Udine in 1511, the son of nobleman Luigi della Torre and his wife Taddea Strasoldo. He became Count of Valdessina in 1533. Early in his career, he was a cleric in Aquileia. He later became the dean of Udine Cathedral. In 1543, he became chamberlain of Pope Paul III. On 7 February 1547 he was elected Bishop of Ceneda and was subsequently consecrated as a bishop. He served as the Apostolic Nuncio to France from 20 August 1547 to 1550. Pope Leo XI
Pope Leo XI ( it, Leone XI; 2 June 153527 April 1605), born Alessandro Ottaviano de' Medici, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 1 April 1605 to his death in April 1605. François de Joyeuse (24 June 1562 – 23 August 1615) was a French churchman and politician. Biography Born at Carcassonne, François de Joyeuse was the second son of Guillaume de Joyeuse and Marie Eléanor de Batarnay. As the younger son of a ''seigneur'' in an intensely religious family of bishops and soldiers, he was destined for a career in the church. He studied in Toulouse, then at the Collège de Navarre, Paris, and received his doctorate degrees in canon and civil law at the University of Orléans.
