Carbutamide (brand name Glucidoral) is an anti-diabetic drug of the sulfonylurea class, developed by Servier. It is classified as first-generation. Hellmuth Kleinsorge
Hellmuth Kleinsorge (* 12 April 1920 in Beuel; † 7 July 2001) was a German medical doctor. Life Hellmuth Kleinsorge studied medicine in Jena. In 1953, after his dissertation and habilitation, he became director of the "Medizinische Poliklinik in Jena". In 1958 - 1960 he was also head of the medical faculty of Jena University (then in the German Democratic Republic). He was the first to show the blood sugar decreasing effect of sulfonamides (particularly carbutamide) and he could also show the anti-arrhytmic effects of ajmaline. As he did not give his acceptance to the Berlin Wall he had to leave is position in Jena in 1962 and became director of a local hospital in Schwerin. He fled the GDR in 1968 and became head of research at Knoll AG (which later became part of the BASF). He also held a professorship at the "Klinikum Mannheim der Universität Heidelberg". Potassium channel blockers are agents which interfere with conduction through potassium channels. Medical uses Arrhythmia Potassium channel blockers used in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia are classified as class III antiarrhythmic agents. Mechanism Class III agents predominantly block the potassium channels, thereby prolonging repolarization. More specifically, their primary effect is on IKr. Since these agents do not affect the sodium channel, conduction velocity is not decreased. The prolongation of the action potential duration and refractory period, combined with the maintenance of normal conduction velocity, prevent re-entrant arrhythmias. (The re-entrant rhythm is less likely to interact with tissue that has become refractory). Sulfonylureas (UK: sulphonylurea) are a class of organic compounds used in medicine and agriculture, for example as antidiabetic drugs widely used in the management of diabetes mellitus type 2. They act by increasing insulin release from the beta cells in the pancreas. A number of sulfonylureas are also used as herbicides, because they can interfere with plant biosynthesis of certain amino acids. Sulfonylureas are also used experimentally to inhibit interleukin 1 beta release from the NALP3 (or NLRP3) inflammasome.
