Carbondale City Hall And Courthouse
Carbondale City Hall and Courthouse, also known as the Carbondale Municipal Building, is a historic Seat of local government, city hall and courthouse building located at Carbondale, Pennsylvania, Carbondale, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1892-1894, and is a brick and bluestone building in the Romanesque Revival architecture, Romanesque-style. It consists of five-story, square, corner tower; three-story wing; and two-story brick wing. The three-story wing, along with the tower, houses the Carbondale City Hall. It features a massive, half-circle primary entrance and rusticated stone and brick Turret (architecture), turrets. Carbondale is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. Carbondale is located approximately 15 miles due northeast of the city of Scranton in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The population was 8,828 at the 2020 census. The land area that became Carbondale was developed by William and Maurice Wurts, the founders of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, during the rise of the anthracite coal mining industry in the early 19th century. It was also a major terminal of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. Carbondale was the site of the first deep vein anthracite coal mine in the United States, and was the site of the Carbondale mine fire which burned from 1946 to the early 1970s. The Carbondale Historical Society is a local historical society in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, United States. It operates a local history museum on the third floor of the Carbondale City Hall and Courthouse. History The first public meeting of the Historical Society, founded in October 1974 by a group of six Carbondale area school teachers, was held in January 1975. The Carbondale City Hall building had been in disrepair at this time, and was being considered for demolition and replacement. However, the intrinsic value of the building seemed too great to destroy, for a group of civic-minded individuals which comprised the Committee to Restore Carbondale City Hall. The Committee and the Society were effectively facing the same issues, and members of both organizations thought it best to consolidate into one entity.
