Capt. Reuben Merrill House
The Captain Reuben Merrill House is an historic house at 233 West Main Street in Yarmouth, Maine. Built in 1858, it is one of the town's largest and most elaborate 19th-century houses, and is one of three known surviving works of Portland architect Thomas J. Sparrow. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is now home to Maine Preservation, a statewide architectural preservation organization. Description and history The Captain Reuben Merrill House is located on the north side of West Main Street ( Maine State Route 115), just east of its junction with Newell Road. It is a large, three-story wood-frame structure, with a hip roof, and a three-story ell extending to the rear. It is finished in clapboard siding and rests on a granite foundation. Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, twelve miles north of the state's largest city, Portland. When originally settled in 1636, as North Yarmouth, it was part of Massachusetts, and remained as such for 213 years. In 1849, twenty-nine years after Maine's admittance to the Union as the twenty-third state, it was incorporated as the Town of Yarmouth. Cumberland is a town in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 8,473 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area, Maine. Cumberland is one of the wealthiest municipalities in the state. History Cumberland, Maine (also known as Cumberland Center), was once part of North Yarmouth, but in 1821, it was incorporated as its own town. Reuben Merrill
Reuben Merrill (December 2, 1818 – June 16, 1875) was an American merchant sea captain. A native of Cumberland, Maine, he lived the latter part of his life in nearby Yarmouth. His house there, now known as the Captain Reuben Merrill House, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Early life Reuben Merrill was born on December 2, 1818, in Cumberland, Maine. Career Merrill was a leading mid-19th-century sea captain. After going to sea in his youth, he gained experience enough to become a master mariner. He was captain of the merchant ships ''Cumberland'', ''Yarmouth'', ''Esther'' and ''Champlain''. Cast iron is a class of iron–carbon alloys with a carbon content more than 2%. Its usefulness derives from its relatively low melting temperature.
