Cape Vincent (village), New York
Cape Vincent is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 726 at the 2010 census. The village is in the west-central part of the town of Cape Vincent and is northwest of Watertown. History The area was formerly controlled by the Onondaga people. French missionaries and explorers passed through the area in the middle of the 17th century. The town of Cape Vincent was originally part of the town of Lyme. In 1849 the town of Cape Vincent separated from Lyme. The village of Cape Vincent was incorporated in 1853. At the time of its incorporation the village had a population of 1,218. By the end of the 19th century, the area was becoming a vacation land due to the nearby Thousand Islands. Thousand Islands
The Thousand Islands (french: Mille-Îles) constitute a North American archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada–US border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario and the U.S. islands in the state of New York. The islands range in size from over to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks. To count as one of the Thousand Islands, emergent land within the river channel must have at least of land above water level year-round, and support at least two living trees. Roxy Hotel (Cape Vincent)
Roxy Hotel is a historic hotel located at Cape Vincent in Jefferson County, New York. It is a red brick structure consisting of two sections: a three-story, eight bay main block and a two-story, four bay side wing. It was built in 1894, and has remained in continuous use as a hotel and center of the local tourist trade. The hotel was restored in 2011 by Michael Treanor, into 16 hotel rooms and an Irish Pub called Monaghan's Irish Pub. Vincent LeRay House
Vincent LeRay House, also known as The Stone House, is a historic home located at Cape Vincent in Jefferson County, New York. It is located within the boundaries of the Broadway Historic District. ''See also:'' Construction and Physical Properties The home was built in 1815 by James D. LeRay for his son, Vincent. The home is a -story, five-by-four-bay stone building. Also on the property is a limestone boathouse, a 2-story stucco cottage, and board and batten garage. Historical Significance Vincent left the house vacant when he moved into his father's mansion in LeRaysville. In 1873, Vincent sold the house to the Peugnet family. The home remained in their possession until the 20th century. The Jean Philippe Galband du Fort House is a historic house located on James Street in Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, New York. Description and history Built in 1818, it is a -story, frame vernacular residence with Greek Revival detailing. It consists of two rectangular gabled blocks joined with a hyphen and a 1-story side wing on the north side. The south block contains a drawing room with a coffered ceiling inset with 24 original oil-on-canvas paintings, including those of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. The drawing room also contains the original wallpaper, chandelier, fireplace, and mirror. Carleton Island
Carleton Island is located in the St Lawrence River in upstate New York. It is part of the Town of Cape Vincent, in Jefferson County. History Originally held by the Iroquois, one of the first Europeans to take notice of the island was Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, in 1720. He called it ''Isle aux Chevreuils'', the Island of Roe Bucks, and wrote in 1721 that its bays could be useful. A 1779 map of the Province of New York indicates that the island was at one time called Isle a la Biche, French for Doe Island. It was also referred to as Buck Island or Deere Island. The island was site of an unofficial treaty in 1783 which saw lands from Cataraqui to Etobicoke Creek from the Mississaugas. Upon review by Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe in 1795 was declared invalid.
