Parliamentary elections were held in Cape Verde on 22 January 2006. The result was a victory for the ruling African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) run by José Maria Neves, which won 41 of the 72 seats in the National Assembly.Elections in Cape Verde

The unicameral National Assembly (Portuguese: ''Assembleia Nacional'') is the legislative body of the Republic of Cabo Verde. History National People's Assembly (1975–1991) The country's first legislative election took place in June 1975. The body was known as the National People's Assembly and its members came from the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which was the sole political party allowed to field candidates. They elected PAIGC Secretary-general Aristides Pereira President on 5 July 1975, when the country officially gained independence from Portugal. One-party elections were again held on 7 December 1980 with Pereira being re-elected unopposed by the Assembly on 12 February 1981. Movement For Democracy (Cape Verde)
The Movement for Democracy ( pt, Movimento para a Democracia, MpD) is a Christian democratic and liberal party in Cape Verde. Established in 1990, it was the ruling party from 1991 to 2001 and returned to power in the 2016 parliamentary election. José Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva () (born 4 June 1962) is a Cape Verdean businessman and politician who has been Prime Minister of Cape Verde since 22 April 2016. He took office after his party, the Movement for Democracy, won the 20 March 2016 parliamentary election. Early life and education In 1988, Silva graduated from the School of Economics and Business Management at the Technical University of Lisbon. Early career Silva started his career in the banking sector. He was the director of administration at the Bank of Cape Verde from 1989 to 1994. José Maria Neves
José Maria Pereira Neves (; born 28 March 1960) is a Cape Verdean politician who is currently the president of Cape Verde, having previously served as the Prime Minister of Cape Verde from 2001 to 2016. He is a member of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV). In the 2021 presidential election, he was elected with 51.7% of votes, beating his nearest rival Carlos Veiga who got 42.4% of the total votes. Biography Neves was born on the island of Santiago in 1960.
