Cape Flats Line
The Cape Flats Line is a commuter rail line in Cape Town, South Africa, operated by Metrorail Western Cape. It connects central Cape Town with the suburbs of Pinelands, Athlone, Lansdowne, Ottery and Retreat. Route The Cape Flats Line service begins at the central Cape Town railway station, from which it runs east along the Cape Town– Bellville main line as far as Maitland. After Maitland station it branches off to the south, passing along the western edge of Pinelands before crossing under the N2 freeway and over the Black River. It then continues south through Athlone and Lansdowne, and then south-west through Ottery and Southfield, before joining the Southern Line route at Heathfield. Services on the Cape Flats Line terminate at occasionally at Heathfield, with the line terminus being Retreat, except for a few trains per day which continue along the Southern Line to Fish Hoek. Ottery, Cape Town
Ottery is a suburb in Cape Town, South Africa. It is on the edge of the Southern Suburbs. The Youngsfield Military Base, Royal Cape Golf Club and Cape Town's 'official' China Town are located in the suburb. Every year the Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery hosts the Cape Argus Junior Cycle Tour on 12 March. Transport There is an Ottery train station present and is on the Cape Flats line, which connects Heathfield to Cape Town via Athlone. The Ottery station was built in 1904 (finished on 1 February). The line was built for private use and was acquired as government property on 1 July 1908. The Golden Arrow busses pass the Ottery centre as well, part of the Wynberg to Khayelitsha route. An electric multiple unit or EMU is a multiple-unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages using electricity as the motive power. An EMU requires no separate locomotive, as electric traction motors are incorporated within one or a number of the carriages. The Southern Line is a commuter rail line operated by Metrorail Western Cape, connecting Cape Town station in central Cape Town, South Africa with the Southern Suburbs and the towns on the west coast of False Bay, terminating in Simon's Town. History The Wynberg Railway Company was established in 1861 to build a railway line from Salt River Junction to Wynberg, which opened on 19 December 1864. In 1876 the company was taken over by the Cape Government Railways, and the line, which had originally been built to the standard gauge, was rebuilt to Cape gauge. The extension to Muizenberg opened on 15 December 1882, and a further extension to Kalk Bay on 5 May 1883. The final extension, to the naval base at Simon's Town, opened on 1 December 1890. Maitland, Cape Town
Maitland is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. Maitland is situated along a number of important transport networks connecting the Cape Town city bowl to the rest of the city. The most important being the railway line that runs through the middle of the suburb and the N1 that is situated on its northern boundary. The area has always been an important transport hub for the city. In 1845 one of the first roads from Stellenbosch through the Maitland area was completed. This effectively connected Cape Town to the rest of Africa as at the time the dunes of the Cape Flats prevented much traffic between the two locations. Bellville Railway Station
Bellville mainline railway station is a railway station in the town of Bellville, Western Cape, South Africa. It is the second-biggest station in the Metrorail Western Cape railway network, after the Cape Town terminus. All trains on Metrorail's Northern Line pass through Bellville, and one branch of the Central Line also terminates there. It is also a stop for Shosholoza Meyl trains that terminate in Cape Town. Bellville Station is a major terminus for Golden Arrow buses; it also has a large minibus taxi rank. To the south of the station is Transnet Freight Rail's main marshalling yard for the Cape Town area. The station building is on the northern side of the tracks, attached to a side platform.
