Cape Breton – Victoria Regional Centre For Education
The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education (formerly the Cape Breton-Victoria School Board) is the public school district that provides educational services for approximately 13,000 students as of 2015-16 in more than 56 elementary, junior high, and high schools, as well as 185 adult learners in four adult education centres. These schools are located in the counties of Cape Breton, and Victoria in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. On January 23, 2018, education consultant Avis Glaze presented a report on the province's school system to government that included the recommendation that the seven elected regional school boards become regional education offices overseen by an appointed provincial advisory council. Cape Breton County is one of eighteen counties in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is located on Cape Breton Island. From 1879 to 1995, the area of the county excluded from towns and cities was incorporated as the Municipality of the County of Cape Breton to provide local government services. Victoria County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Victoria and the Wagmatcook 1 reserve. History Named after Queen Victoria, it was established by statute in 1851. Cape Breton County was divided into two separate counties in that year, with the northern portion becoming Victoria County. Like other parts of Nova Scotia, the county was sparsely inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq, who hunted in the area. The earliest settlers of Victoria County were almost exclusively Loyalists, with most arriving from the United States in the years following the American Revolutionary War.
