Canton Of Tonnay-Charente
The canton of Tonnay-Charente is an administrative division of the Charente-Maritime department, western France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Tonnay-Charente. The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente () is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department in southwestern France. In the 1680s, Fort Lupin was constructed near Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente. Population Places and Monuments *Fontaine de Lupin (Lupin "fountain"): This building, set in the bed of the Charente river, was the source of supply for drinking water on ships from the Rochefort arsenal. It was located this far downstream to allow the ships to negotiate the muddy and shallow tidal estuary without the encumbrance of the considerable weight of water. The original construction of around 1676 was completely rebuilt in 1763; it is one of only three such watering places (aiguades) in France (the others being at Brest and Belle-Île). Charente-Maritime
Charente-Maritime () is a department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region on the southwestern coast of France. Named after the river Charente, its prefecture is La Rochelle. As of 2019, it had a population of 651,358 with an area of 6,864 square kilometres (2,650 sq mi). History Previously a part of the provinces of Saintonge and Aunis, Charente-Inférieure was one of the 83 original departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790. On 4 September 1941, during World War II, it was renamed as Charente-Maritime. When the department was first organised, the commune of Saintes was designated as the prefecture of the department (Saintes had previously been the capital of Saintonge). This changed in 1810 when Napoleon passed an imperial decree to move the prefecture to La Rochelle.
