Canton Of Monthureux-sur-Saône
The Canton of Monthureux-sur-Saône is a former French administrative and electoral grouping of communes in the Vosges ''département'' of eastern France and in the region of Lorraine. It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. It consisted of 11 communes, which joined the canton of Darney in 2015. Monthureux-sur-Saône
Monthureux-sur-Saône (, literally ''Monthureux on Saône'') is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France. Inhabitants are called ''Monthurolais''. History Origins and Etymology The name Monthureux comes from the base Latin word "monasteriolum" meaning 'little monastery'. By the fourteenth century the name had mutated to Monstreuil. The origins of the little town are uncertain. During the turbulent aftermath of the Gallo-Roman period, the site currently occupied by Monthureux-sur-Saône was probably abandoned to the forest. The name "Monasteriolum" (little monastery) only dates from the end of the ninth century. Subsequent spelling included "Monstreuil", "Montreuil", "Montreux" and "Montureux". The "h" in the spelling of the modern name is believed to result from a clerical error by a transcriber in 1628 who wrote "Montheureux". Martinvelle () is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France. Inhabitants are called Martinvillois. Geography The commune lies on the southwest of the Vôge Plateau and at the edge of the department, beside the adjacent Haute-Saône department. The northern part of the commune is within the Forest of Darney. The village is southeast of Contrexéville, to the south-south-east of Monthureux-sur-Saône and north of Corre. The intersection of the 48th parallel north with the 6th meridian east lies within the commune. History The village's history is more linked with that of the adjacent Franche-Comté than that of Lorraine. Until the French Revolution the lords of Passavant ruled here. Godoncourt
Godoncourt () is a commune in the Vosges department, Grand Est, Northeastern France. Until 1789, Godoncourt was a village of Franche-Comté. It was incorporated in the Vosges territory after 1789. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was burnt by Bernard of Saxe-Weimar's mercenaries and its burghers were killed. Bound to Jonvelle until mid 18th Century, Godoncourt welcomed the monks who started to found the Sainte Anne Hermitage in the 12th Century. The last hermits, who were from Saint Jean-Baptiste congregation from Besançon, lived in the hermitage until the 1760s. The hermitage became a private property after the sale of the Biens Nationaux.
