The canton of Contes is an administrative division of the Alpes-Maritimes department, southeastern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Contes. Cantons Of France
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). For this reason, such elections were known in France as "cantonal elections", until 2015 when their name was changed to "departmental elections" to match the departmental councils' name. Tende
Tende (; Italian, Occitan and Royasc: ''Tenda'') is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. Geography Tende is located within Mercantour National Park in the French Alps. The mountainous commune is bordered by Italy to the north, with the boundary determined by the watershed line between the two countries. This line of mountain tops contains more than 20 summits exceeding . A large rectangle of land running east/west, Tende is split from north to south by the Roya river valley. The tributary Réfréi river joins the Roya within the limits of Tende. The Col de Tende (Tende Pass), a strategic pass through the Alps to Piedmont, has been modernized to be a road and railway tunnel. Sospel
Sospel (; Mentonasc: Sospèl, Italian Sospello) is a commune (municipality) and former schismatic episcopal seat (1381-1418) in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France near the Italian border and not far from Monte Carlo. History and remains The town dates back to the 5th century, when it served as an important staging post on the royal road from Nice to Turin. Its main monument is the former cathedral. * The old toll bridge used by travellers to cross the Bévéra, built in the 13th century, still stands. It was bombed by the Germans during World War II to prevent contact between the French Resistance ("The Maquis") and the Italians. Much of the town was destroyed. Renovated after World War II it now houses the tourist office. * The ruins of a tower, part of a château (residential castle) belonging to the counts of Provence, are all that remain of the 14th century city walls. Saorge
Saorge (; Royasc: ''Sauèrge''; Brigasc: ''Savurgë''; it, Saorgio, oc, Saorj, lij, Savurgiu) is a Communes of France, commune in the Alpes-Maritimes Departments of France, department in southeastern France. Highway E74 which runs north from Menton, passes through Saorge on its way to the Col de Tende ( it, Colle di Tenda) where it crosses into Italy. The region belonged to the old County of Nice. Beginning in 1388 Saorge was part of Kingdom of Sardinia, Sardinia-Piedmont. In June 1793, Sardinia defeated the armies of the First French Republic in the Battle of Saorge (1793), First Battle of Saorgio. In the Second Second Battle of Saorgio (1794), Battle of Saorgio in April 1794 the French wrested the town from the Piedmontese. Peille
Peille (; oc, Pelha; it, Peglio Marittimo) is a commune perched on a rock between Monaco and Menton in the Alpes Maritimes department in southeastern France. It overlooks the River Peillon. Higher still than the village are the ruins of a château dating from the thirteenth century. Peille includes the quartiers of La Grave de Peille, where the cement works of VICAT is located, Paravieille, Gaudissart, St. Martin de Peille, La Paran, Les Lacs, Colletta Soubrana de la Grava, Colletta Soutrana de la Grava. Peille borders Blausasc, Peillon, and La Turbie. Lucéram (; it, Lucerame, oc, Luceram) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. Lucéram is in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are called the ''Lucéramois''. Luceram village is home of Peïra-Cava, the first station of winter sports department created in 1909. The village has many ecclesiastical and medieval monuments and altarpieces of Ludovico Brea. Population Geography The town is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Foil. In the lower valley, there is an intersection of the salt road that leads from the port of Nice in Savoy, through the valley of Vésubie. The village lies at 650 meters altitude, and 27 kilometers from Nice by D 2566. Toponymy The origin of the name "Lucéram" is uncertain. Lucéram is originally the name Lucerius or Lucerus. L'Escarène
L'Escarène (; oc, L'Escarèa) is an ancient commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. It was part of the historic County of Nice until 1860, named ''Scarena''. It was a main stop along the Route de Sel during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, between French Provence and Italian Piedmont, on the Nice-Turin road. It was built in the bottom of the valley of Spangle of Escarène at the confluence of the streams of Redebraus and Paillon. More than half of its territory is made up of pine and oak, with marked trails for easy walks and hikes. This commune is known for a sad case of racist group lynching, in which a 39-year-old father was killed in 2022. Coaraze
Coaraze (; oc, Coarasa) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Geography Coaraze is a small village in the Nice hinterland, in the valley of the River Paillon. The closest town is Contes, away. The village itself is built on a sandstone mount at the foot of Mount Férion (1,414 metres or high). History Erected as a ''baronnie'' in 1629, Coaraze was under Spanish administration from 1744 to 1748. In the nineteenth century the old trail was replaced by a road.
