Canton Of Avallon
The canton of Avallon is an administrative division of the Yonne department, central France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Avallon. Cantons Of France
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). For this reason, such elections were known in France as "cantonal elections", until 2015 when their name was changed to "departmental elections" to match the departmental councils' name. Saint-Léger-Vauban
Saint-Léger-Vauban () is a commune in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France. It lies within the Parc naturel régional du Morvan. Geography The town is situated between Rouvray and Quarré-les-Tombes. The nearest large town is Avallon. History The town was originally named Saint Leger, then Saint-Léger-de-Fourcheret until 1867, when Napoleon III issued an Imperial decree renaming it Saint-Léger-de-Vauban, after the French military engineer Vauban, who was born there in 1633. Sights The church was restored in 1865 and has a functional bell tower. Saint-Léger-Vauban is also home to the Abbaye de la Pierre Qui Vire, and the Chateau de Rueres. Economy Saint-Léger's primary economic activity is farming, though there are several small shops, a post office, school, and multiple cheese makers. Sainte-Magnance
Sainte-Magnance () is a commune in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France. History The village was originally named Saint-Pierre-sous-Cordois. In 448 bishop Germanus of Auxerre (380 - 448) died in Ravenna on the Adriatic coast. Magnance, a young woman from Ravenna accompanied his remains back to Auxerre, but she died on the way near the Saint-Pierre-sous-Cordois village, in November 448. Her travelling companions buried her there. Then she was forgotten, until the 7th century when a pilgrim came to rest at the same spot, laying his head on a horse's skull. During his sleep he dreamed of Magnance protecting him from a snake. Upon awakening he found that there was a snake in the horse's skull. He told the story at the village. The inhabitants went and found Magnance's body, brought it back to the village, buried her in the church and renamed their village "Sainte-Magnance" in her honour.
