Canossa Hospital (Caritas)
Canossa Hospital (Caritas) () is a private Catholic Community hospital in Hong Kong. Overview and history Canossa Hospital was founded by the Canossian Daughters of Charity in 1929. The original building with 16 beds was destroyed during World War II. The present building was opened in 1960. It is an acute non-profit general hospital with 146 beds at mid-level. A new extension was opened in 2014 and the old building is now under major renovation floor by floor. The management of Canossa Hospital was passed on to Caritas Hong Kong in June 1991. The name of the Hospital was subsequently changed to Canossa Hospital (Caritas). The joint forces aim at rendering quality holistic health care services to the people of Hong Kong, a service which aims to continue the Mission of St. Magdalene of Canossa, the founder of the Canossian Sisters, for the sick and the less fortunate. Caritas Hong Kong is a charitable organisation, a member of Caritas Internationalis, founded by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong in July 1953. It started with relief and rehabilitation services to the poor and the distressed after the Second World War. It nowaday expands to involve social service, education service, medical service, hospitality service and many others. It is led by Board of Management chairman Dominic Chan. Magdalene Of Canossa
Magdalena di Canossa (1 March 1774 – 10 April 1835) was an Italian professed religious and foundress of the two Canossian congregations. Magdalena was a leading advocate for the poor in her region after she witnessed first hand the plight of the poor following the spillover effects of the French Revolution into the Italian peninsula through the Napoleonic invasion of the northern territories. Canossa collaborated with humanitarians such as Leopoldina Naudet and Antonio Rosmini in her mission of promoting the needs of the poor and setting a new method of religious life for both men and women.
