Canopy Housing
Canopy Housing are a self-help housing organisation based in Leeds, UK. They were winners of the UN World Habitat Award 2015/16 in partnership with Giroscope. Canopy renovate empty properties with volunteers and homeless people, who become their tenants after creating good quality affordable homes for themselves. They bring derelict property back into use, house homeless families, train unemployed people in construction skills, create jobs, improve community cohesion and contribute to the regeneration of disadvantaged neighbourhoods. They now manage more than 80 properties, more than a third of which they own. Community Empty properties are well recognised as an issue nationally, particularly in urban areas, and fall under the remit of the Empty Homes Agency. Empty Homes Agency
The Empty Homes Agency was established in 1992 by Antony Fletcher with assistance from Serge Lourie as a registered charity in England that works to help people create homes from empty properties and campaigns for more empty homes to be brought into use for the benefit of those in housing need. In 2010 it changed its operational name to Empty Homes. The founding director was Bob Lawrence. In 2018 it changed its name to Action on Empty Homes. The charity The Empty Homes Agency is a charitable industrial and provident society, as well as a charitable housing association, and a member of the National Federation of Housing. It is a registered charity in England, No. 27697R, but is registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965 and thus not registered with the Charity Commission. Leeds Federated Housing Association
Leeds Federated Housing Association was formed in 1974 and registered in 1975 by a number of smaller associations coming together to form a 'federation', for the benefit of the community. The idea was that by working together they could achieve more than as separate organisations. That philosophy has prevailed throughout Leeds Federated's history, with partnerships and joint working arrangements being a common feature of its work over the years. The Association grew quickly through the 1970s and early 1980s with a lot of pre 1919 stock. Jim Coulter established the association and was the director for 12 years before going on to become the Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation.
