Canoeing At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's K-1 200 Metres
The men's canoe sprint K-1 200 metres at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro took place between 19 and 20 August at Lagoa Stadium. The medals were presented by José Perurena López, IOC member, Spain and Frank Garner, Board Member of the ICF. Competition format The competition comprised heats, semifinals, and a final round. The leading five in each heat plus the fastest sixth place advanced to the semifinals. The top four from the semifinals advanced to the "A" final, and competed for medals. The other semifinalists advanced to the "B" final. Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Portuguese: ''Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas'') is a lagoon in the district of Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, Lagoa in the Zona Sul (South Zone) area of Rio de Janeiro. Mark De Jonge
Mark de Jonge (born 15 February 1984) is a Canadian male sprint canoeist, primarily specializing the 200 m kayak event. De Jonge won a bronze medal in the K-1 200 m at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He is the two time reigning world champion in same event having also won a silver medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in 2013. He is also the current Pan American champion in the 200 having won gold in Toronto at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, where he also won an additional bronze, and a silver and bronze at previous editions of the Pan Am Games. He was named the Air Canada Athlete of the Year in 2015 for Canada. Career Born in Calgary in 1984, de Jonge moved to Halifax in 1997 where he started kayaking. Stephen Bird (born 11 May 1988) is a South African-born Australian sprint canoeist. He is a three-time national champion (2010, 2011, and 2012) in the men's kayak doubles (200 m), and a member of the Canning River Canoe Club in Perth, Western Australia, under his personal coach Ramon Andersson. Bird took up canoeing in 1996 in Richmond, South Africa, together with his brother. They used the kayaks left by his uncle, who immigrated to Australia that year. He attended Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal, during which time he was awarded his Protea Blazer for representing South Africa at junior level.
