2001 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 10 February 2001 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The two-term Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop. The election produced the biggest change of seats at any election since 1911, with Labor winning 14 seats from the Coalition as well as an Independent-held seat, while losing the seat of Kalgoorlie for the first time since 1923 to Liberal candidate Matt Birney. Meanwhile, a minister in the outgoing Government, Doug Shave, lost his seat of Alfred Cove to Independent candidate Dr Janet Woollard, who was also a member of the Liberals for Forests party. Max Evans (politician)
George Maxwell Evans (29 November 1930 – 30 April 2019) was an Australian politician who represented the Liberal Party in the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1986 to 2001. He served as a government minister from 1993 to 1999 under Richard Court. He was a chartered accountant and prominent in Western Australia's business community before entering politics. Evans was also involved with the Scouting Movement in Western Australia during his lifetime. Early life Evans was born in Perth, the second son of Victor Gordon Evans and the former Joyce Marguerite Stephens. He was raised in the western suburbs, attending Thomas Street State School, Subiaco (now known as Rosalie Primary School) from 1936 to 1942. He then went on to attend Scotch College from 1943 to 1948, and was prefect in his final year. He was on the school hockey, athletic, and tennis teams. One Nation (Australia)
Pauline Hanson's One Nation (PHON or ONP), also known as One Nation or One Nation Party, is a right-wing populist political party in Australia. It is led by Pauline Hanson. One Nation had electoral success in the late 1990s, before suffering an extended decline after 2001. Its leaders have been accused, charged, and later acquitted, of fraud, and the party has suffered from numerous defections, resignations and other internal scandals which culminated in Hanson's resignation from the party. The National Party of Australia (WA) Inc, branded The Nationals WA, is a political party in Western Australia. It is affiliated with the National Party of Australia but maintains a separate structure and identity. Since the 2021 state election, the Nationals WA is the senior party in an opposition alliance with the WA Liberal Party in the WA Parliament. Prior to the election, the National Party was sitting in the crossbench and the Liberal Party was the sole opposition party. The election resulted in the National Party winning more seats than the Liberal Party and gaining official opposition status. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 59 single-member electoral districts. These districts are often referred to as ''electorates'' or ''seats''. The ''Electoral Distribution Act 1947'' requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. Electoral boundaries are determined by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. Electoral districts are subdivisions of electoral regions for the Legislative Council and have approximately an equal number of electors. Liberals For Forests
Liberals for Forests was an Australian political minor party. It contested both state and federal elections between 2002 and 2008, but only ever achieved one elected representative – Janet Woollard (elected as an Independent) in Western Australia. It never achieved representation at the federal level. The party was founded in 2001 by Dr Keith Woollard, husband of Janet Woollard and an ex- AMA president. Janet successfully contested a seat in the February 2001 state election, was re-elected at the 2005 election and again at the 2008 election. The party generally professed itself to be ideologically aligned with the centre-right sympathies of the Liberal Party of Australia, but was aligned with the ALP in certain states such as NSW but with a greater regard to environmentalism. Electoral District Of Kimberley
Kimberley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, located in the state's far north and named after the Kimberley region. The electorate has one of the highest Aboriginal enrolments of any seat in the Parliament. The seat has been held by the Labor Party since 1980—inclusive of one term under a Labor Independent (1996–2001), but has become increasingly marginal in recent years. It saw an extremely close and almost unprecedented four-way race at the 2013 state election, with relatively small primary vote margins separating the Labor, Liberal, National and Green candidates in a result that was not known for several days. Ernest Francis Bridge, AM (15 December 193631 March 2013) was an Australian parliamentarian and country music singer. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 2001, representing the electorate of Kimberley, first as a Labor Party representative (1980–1996) and then as a Labor Independent MP (1996–2001). He was the first indigenous Australian to be a Cabinet minister in any Australian government. Biography Bridge was born in Halls Creek; among his ancestors was First Fleet convict Matthew James Everingham. Murray Scott Montgomery (born 15 January 1943) is a former Australian politician. He was born at Mount Barker and was a farmer before entering politics. In 1989 he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council as a National member for South West. From 1989 to 1992 he was party spokesman on Sport and Recreation, Youth and South West, and from 1992 to 1993 spoke on Sport and Recreation for the Coalition. Electoral District Of Wagin
Wagin was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia. It was in existence from 1911 to 1950 and from 1989 to 2017. The seat was named after the town of Wagin and incorporated portions of the Wheatbelt, albeit with varying boundaries. Wagin was a safe seat for the National Party for most of its existence. History Wagin was first created for the 1911 state election. Until 1947, its member was Sydney Stubbs who represented several different conservative parties over that time. Stubbs was succeeded by Crawford Nalder, who would later become Country Party leader. Wagin was abolished ahead of the 1950 state election whence Nalder instead became the member for Katanning.
