1975 Australian Federal Election
The 1975 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 13 December 1975. All 127 seats in the House of Representatives and all 64 seats in the Senate were up for election, due to a double dissolution. Malcolm Fraser had been commissioned as caretaker prime minister following the dismissal of Gough Whitlam's three-year-old Labor government by Governor-General Sir John Kerr, on 11 November 1975. The same day, Fraser advised an immediate double dissolution, in accordance with Kerr's stipulated conditions (see 1975 Australian constitutional crisis). The Coalition of Fraser's Liberal Party of Australia and Doug Anthony's National Country Party secured government in its own right, winning the largest majority government to date in Australian history. Nigel Drury
Edward Nigel Drury (15 May 1911 – 17 May 1984) was an Australian politician and grandson of Colonel Edward Robert Drury, pastoralist, business man, the first CEO of the Queensland National Bank, and a member of the family well known in Brisbane at the end of the 19th century. Drury was born in Clifton, Queensland and was educated at Brisbane Grammar School before becoming a corporate accountant. He served in the military from 1942 to 1946 and was on the Queensland State Executive of the Liberal Party on his return. In 1949, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for the new seat of Ryan. Cleaver Bunton
Cleaver Ernest Bunton (5 May 190220 January 1999) was a long-serving Mayor of Albury, New South Wales, Australia, who came to national prominence in 1975 when he was controversially appointed to the Senate by New South Wales Liberal Party Premier, Tom Lewis, to fill a position vacated by an Australian Labor Party member. Early life Born in Albury, Bunton left school at 13 and initially worked as a clerk in a solicitor's office before becoming an accountant. He also was involved in Albury sporting and community affairs, playing Australian rules football with the Albury Football Club, becoming captain-coach and club secretary at 17. His younger brother Haydn Bunton went on to become a notable Australian rules footballer. Bunton married Eileen O'Malley in 1930. Geography Since 1984, federal electoral division boundaries in Australia have been determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. John Armstrong England CMG (12 October 191118 June 1985) was an Australian politician and Administrator of the Northern Territory. Early life Born in Sydney, John England attended state schools and then Brisbane Boys' College. Career He was a bank officer before undertaking military service from 1942 to 1946. From 1947 he was a farmer near Grenfell in New South Wales. In 1960, England was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Country Party member for Calare, in the by-election caused by the resignation of John Howse. John Marriott (Australian Politician)
John Edward Marriott (16 February 1913 – 13 April 1994) was an Australian politician. Born in Elliott, Tasmania, the fourth son of Frank Marriott and Alice Maud , he was educated at Launceston Church Grammar School and later in Hobart at The Hutchins School before joining the military in 1939. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in June 1940 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in July 1942. He was demobilised in October 1945 as an honorary captain.. He was a staff member with the Tasmanian Liberal Party from 1945 to 1949, and was Secretary to the Tasmanian Opposition Leader 1949–1953. In 1953, he was appointed to the Australian Senate as a Liberal Senator for Tasmania following the death of Senator Jack Chamberlain. On 14 September 1971 he was appointed an Assistant Minister, holding office until the McMahon coalition government was defeated in December 1972. Sir Kenneth McColl Anderson, (11 October 1909 – 29 March 1985) was an Australian politician. Early life and career Anderson was born at sea, off South Australia, when his parents were returning from a visit to Europe. He was the son of David Anderson (member for Ryde in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, 1920–1927) and educated at Ryde Public School and Petersham Intermediate Schools in Sydney. He worked as an insurance clerk, auctioneer, estate agent and property valuer in the Sydney suburb of Eastwood. He married Madge Merrion in June 1936. He served in the second Australian Imperial Force during World War II as a lieutenant in the 8th Signals Division in Malaya and was held by the Japanese as a prisoner of war in for three years at Changi Prison and on the Burma Railway. Alexander James de Burgh Forbes, (16 December 1923 – 10 August 2019), often known as A. J. Forbes, was an Australian politician. He served in the House of Representatives from 1956 to 1975 as a member of the Liberal Party, representing the Division of Barker in South Australia. He held ministerial office in the Coalition governments of the 1960s and 1970s, serving as Minister for the Navy (1963–1964), Army (1963–1966), Health (1966–1971), and Immigration (1971–1972). At his death, Forbes was the last surviving Liberal minister who served in the ministries of Sir Robert Menzies, Harold Holt and John McEwen, as well as the First Gorton Ministry. Sir David Eric Fairbairn, (3 March 1917 – 1 June 1994) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1975. He held ministerial office as Minister for Air (1962–1964), National Development (1964–1969), Education and Science (1971), and Defence (1971–1972). Early life Fairbairn was born in Claygate, Surrey.
