2012 Queensland State Election
The 2012 Queensland state election was held on 24 March 2012 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The Labor Party (ALP), led by Premier Anna Bligh, was defeated by the opposition Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Campbell Newman. It is only the sixth time that Queenslanders have ousted a sitting government since 1915. The ALP was attempting to win a ninth consecutive election victory, having won every general election since 1989, despite being out of office between 1996 and 1998. Katter's Australian Party contested its first election. Before the election, it held two seats whose members had been elected as LNP candidates. Labor suffered one of the worst defeats of a state government since Federation, and the worst defeat of a sitting government in Queensland history. Robert Schwarten
Robert Evan Schwarten (born 6 October 1954) is an Australian politician. Early life Schwarten was born in Rockhampton, and is married with two sons. Before his entry into politics, he was a teacher and a ministerial advisor to the Deputy Premier. Political career From 1985 to 1991 he was an alderman on Rockhampton City Council. A member of the Labor Party, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 1989 as the member for Rockhampton North, but was defeated in 1992. In 1995 he was reelected to parliament, this time as the member for Rockhampton. He was Minister for Public Works and Information and Communication Technology in Anna Bligh's Labor Government. He held the Public Works portfolio from 1998 to 2011. Schwarten stood down from Parliament and was replaced by Bill Byrne, who held the seat for Labor. Margaret Keech
Margaret Majella Keech (born 18 September 1954) is a former Australian Labor Party politician who served as a minister in the Cabinet of Queensland, the Government Whip, and the Member of Parliament for Albert between 2001 and 2012. Early life and career Prior to entering Parliament, Keech was a language and learning advisor for international students, ranging from kindergartners to post-doctoral students at the Queensland University of Technology. She also has a small business background and is a member of the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce and the Australian Services Union. In 1981, Keech started the first public playgroup in Beenleigh and later established the popular Sunday craft market in Main St. She was also the co-founder of the local Residents Association and was chair of the Beenleigh Police District Community Consultative Committee. Electoral District Of Albert
Albert was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland which existed from 1887 to 1949 and 1959 to 2017. Albert was named for the Albert River, which runs through the electorate and separates Logan City from City of Gold Coast. It was first created in a redistribution in 1887 ahead of the 1888 colonial election and continued to exist (with various boundary alterations) until 1949, when the Darlington and Southport electorates were created. In 1959, the electorate was established again. The 1971 and 1977 redistributions greatly reduced the area of the electorate and minor changes were made in 1991, including the loss of Carbrook in the north and coastal areas below Paradise Point in the south. Its consistently changing boundaries together with its existence in a high-growth area do not provide consistent political leanings over time, although it showed more inclination towards the Labor Party over time than any other Gold Coast seat. Katter's Australian Party
Katter's Australian Party (KAP) is an agrarian political party in Australia. It was founded by Bob Katter, an independent and former Nationals MP for the seat of Kennedy, with a registration application lodged to the Australian Electoral Commission in 2011. Katter has been re-elected under the party's label at the 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022 federal elections. The party also won two seats at the 2012 Queensland state election which it retained at the 2015 state election. The party won an additional seat at the 2017 state election which it retained at the 2020 state election. The Liberal National Party of Queensland (LNP) is a major political party in Queensland, Australia. It was formed in 2008 by a merger of the Queensland divisions of the Liberal Party and the National Party. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. Nanango is an electoral division in the state of Queensland, Australia. Notable towns include Nanango, Kingaroy and Crows Nest. It has existed twice. It was first created in 1912, and was replaced by Barambah in 1950. It was recreated in 2001, as a replacement for Barambah. Nanango was the original seat of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen (from 1947 to 1950). The seat has never been won by the Labor Party in either of its incarnations; indeed, counting its history as Barambah (which covered essentially the same area), it has been in the hands of a conservative party or a conservative independent for over a century. Dorothy Ruth "Dolly" Pratt (born 11 March 1955) is an Australian politician. Born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, she was a Justice of the Peace and coffee shop proprietor in Queensland before entering politics. She also worked at cattle sale yards. At the 1998 state election, she won the seat of Barambah in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, representing Pauline Hanson's One Nation. She left One Nation in 1999 to sit as an independent. Mike Horan (politician)
Michael James Horan, AM (born 1 July 1944) is a former Australian politician who represented the seat of Toowoomba South in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 18 May 1991 to 24 March 2012. Originally he was a member of the National Party of Australia, but follow its merger he is now a member of the Liberal National Party of Queensland until his retirement. Early life Prior to entering parliament, Horan was employed as the General Manager of the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland and General Manager of the Toowoomba Greyhound Racing Club.
