1991 New South Wales State Election
Elections to the 50th Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday 25 May 1991. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and half the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Liberal-National Coalition government of Premier Nick Greiner, which enjoyed a considerable majority following their landslide win at the 1988 election, was seeking a second term in office against new Labor Opposition Leader Bob Carr. The government had reduced the number of lower house seats from 109 to 99 for the 1991 election, reversing an increase approved by the Unsworth Labor government. Background Greiner Government The 1988 election generated a two-party preferred swing to the Coalition of 8.4% and saw the Labor Party record its lowest primary vote in half a century. This was a clear rejection of the Unsworth Government, although it was less clear whether the electorate was endorsing the full range of Coalition policies. Fred Hankinson
Frederick Charles Hankinson (21 June 1925 – 7 October 1997) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1984 to 1991. Hankinson was born in Auburn, New South Wales, and was educated locally at public schools. After leaving school he became a meatworker, and became active in the union movement. He joined the Labor Party in 1959 and was State President of the Australian Metal Industry Employees Union and an executive member of the New South Wales Trades and Labour Council. He was also president of the Auburn State Electoral Council for five years. In 1984, he was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council after the resignation of Paul Landa; he served until 1991. Hankinson died at Camperdown in 1997. John Matthews (Australian Politician)
John Cyril James Matthews (11 February 1928 – 19 August 2019) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1981 to 1991. Matthews was born in Sydney to Cyril Claude Matthews, a rubber technician, and Helen Cummings. He was educated at private schools Christian Brothers College, Rose Bay; St Stanislaus' College (Bathurst), and then the University of Sydney, where he studied for a Master of Pharmacy 1947–50. He worked as a pharmacist, and married Dympna Guthrie on 11 April 1955 at Bathurst; they would have six children. In 1965 he was elected to Bathurst City Council and was immediately elected mayor; he held both positions until 1976, and also served on Southern Mitchell Count Council 1968–77. In 1969 he established Devro Pty Ltd and Uncle Ben's Pet Foods Bathurst, and in 1970 opened Clyde Industries Ltd. Electoral District Of Hurstville
Hurstville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, named after and including the Sydney suburb of Hurstville. It was first established prior to the 1913 state election. It was abolished in 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation and absorbed into St George. It was recreated in 1927 and dissolved in a distribution prior to the 1999 state election. Guy Yeomans
Guy Andrew Yeomans (born 5 November 1954), is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal member for Hurstville in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1984 to 1991. Yeomans was born in Sydney and attended Sydney Technical High School and then the University of Sydney, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education, majoring in government, history and English. He was a high school teacher from 1977 to 1984. In 1984, Yeomans was selected as the Liberal candidate to challenge state Labor MP Kevin Ryan in the seat of Hurstville, winning by 531 votes. He was re-elected in 1988 (defeating future federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland). Following the 1991 redistribution, however, Hurstville became a notionally Labor seat. Neil Pickard
Neil Edward William Pickard (13 February 192913 April 2007) was a New South Wales politician and Minister of the Crown in the cabinets of Sir Eric Willis and Nick Greiner. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 26 years from 17 November 1973 to 3 May 1991 for the Liberal Party until his retirement from politics upon the abolition of his seat at the election. He was appointed NSW Agent-General in London, but was recalled soon after due to expenses abuse. Early life Pickard was born in Strathfield in Sydney, the son of Edward Picard and Mary MacGilvray. John Dowd (politician)
John Robert Arthur Dowd Order of Australia, AO King's Counsel, KC (born 12 November 1940), is a former leader of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. He was the Chancellor (education)#Australia, Chancellor of Southern Cross University between 2002 and 2014, and the President of ActionAid Australia, an international aid organisation. Early years and background Dowd was educated at Fort Street High School and the University of Sydney where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws, LLB. Before entering Parliament, he was admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1967. Dowd later was admitted to the Bar of Ireland and became a member of the King's Inns in Dublin. Electoral District Of Wakehurst
The Electoral district of Wakehurst is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It covers a significant part of Sydney's Northern Beaches as well as parts of the Forest District. Created in 1962, it has been won by the Liberal Party at all but two elections over the last half-century. History Created in 1962, Wakehurst was named in honour of the popular long-serving Governor of New South Wales from 1937 to 1946, Lord Wakehurst. It was held by the Liberal Party from its creation until the 1978 election, when it was won by the Labor Party as part of the first Wranslide. Although the seat is ancestrally Liberal, Labor held the seat until the 1984 election, when the Liberals retook the seat. The seat was first won in 1962 by Dick Healey of the Liberal Party. John David Booth
John David Booth (4 November 1950 – 17 November 2011) was a Liberal Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing the electorate of Wakehurst from 24 March 1984 to 3 May 1991. Born in 1950, Booth was educated at Gordon West Public School and Sydney Church of England Grammar School. After graduating high school he attended the University of Sydney, while resident in St Paul's College, where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees. Booth joined the Liberal Party in 1969 while at university and became the president of the Sydney University Liberal Club (1971–1972) and rose to be Federal President Australian University Liberal Federation from 1972 to 1974. Kenneth Warren Reed (born 22 July 1944) is a former Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1981 to 1991.
