1985 Victorian State Election
The 1985 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 2 March 1985, was for the 50th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect all 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. Since the previous election, the number of members of the Legislative Assembly was increased by 7 to 88. Lindsay Thompson, who led the Liberal Party to a defeat at the 1982 election with a 17-seat swing against it, resigned the leadership of the party on 5 November 1982. He was succeeded by Jeff Kennett. At the election, the incumbent Labor Party government led by John Cain Jr. maintained its electoral support, though the Liberal Party did increase the number of seats. It was the first time since Federation that a Labor government had been reelected in Victoria. Max McDonald
Maxwell John McDonald (18 April 1927 – 28 August 2019) was an Australian politician. He was born in Essendon, to RAAF officer Ewen McColl McDonald and Hilda Ferguson. He attended state and technical schools before becoming an electrical operations officer and electrician. He joined the Labor Party in 1952, and was three times president of the Eildon- Alexandra branch. The electoral district of Evelyn is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly covering the urban fringe north east of Melbourne. It was first proclaimed in 1859. The seat has shrunk considerably in size as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne grew. It now includes the suburbs and towns of Coldstream, Gruyere, Lilydale, and Wonga Park. The seat is usually safe for the Liberal Party but it was won by the Labor Party during their three landslide victories of 1952, 1982 and 2002. The electoral district of Mornington is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The electorate can be described as outer metropolitan and rural, including animal farming, grape production and wineries. The district is 155 square kilometres in area. It was first created in 1859 when the Electoral district of Evelyn and Mornington was abolished and split in two. The district of Mornington initially included the entire Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and French Island. Currently it includes Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha and Tuerong, and parts of Baxter and Moorooduc. Mornington has been held by the Liberal Party since it was re-created in 1985. David Hassett
David Lindsay Hassett (born 3 December 1947) is an Australian politician. He was born in Frankston to cabinet maker Edward John Hassett and Daphne Marie Hailwood. After attending local state schools, he became an officer with the Commonwealth Bank in 1966. On 10 December 1968, he married Denise Lesley Smith, with whom he had two children. They divorced in 2004, and Hassett married Vera Elizabeth Jones on 14 July 2005. Hassett was treasurer of the Labor Party's Flinders federal electorate assembly in 1977, and served as secretary of the Mornington party branch from 1978 to 1979. In 1982, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Dromana, but was defeated in 1985. Robert Allen Jolly (born 27 January 1945) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Box Hill to Athol Percival Jolly, a store manager, and Marjorie Melba. He attended local state schools and then Monash University, from which he received a Bachelor of Economics (Honours), a Diploma of Education and a Master of Economics. He joined the Labor Party in 1966. From 1968 to 1970 he was a senior teaching fellow at Monash University's economics department, and in 1971 was employed as a senior research officer with the Commonwealth Department of Labour and National Service's social policy section. He lectured in economics at Swinburne Institute of Technology in 1972, after which he worked as a research officer and industrial advocate for the Australian Council of Trade Unions. David Kennedy (Australian Politician)
Andrew David Kennedy (born 20 March 1940) is a former Australian politician. Born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, he attended University High School in Melbourne and then the University of Melbourne, after which he became a teacher in Victorian state schools. In 1969, he was elected as a Labor member to the Australian House of Representatives in the by-election for the seat of Bendigo following Noel Beaton's resignation. He held the seat until his defeat in 1972. In 1982, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Bendigo, and in 1985 he transferred to Bendigo West, a position he held until 1992 when the Labor government was defeated. Kennedy's older brother, Cyril James Kennedy, also served in the Victorian state parliament, as the member for the Legislative Council seat of Waverley from 1979 to 1992.
