1978 New South Wales State Election
A general election was held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 7 October 1978. The result was a landslide victory for the Labor Party under Neville Wran, popularly known as the "Wranslide." It is notable for being so successful for the Labor Party that it tallied 57 percent of the primary vote, the largest primary vote for any party in over a century. Having gone into the election with a razor-thin majority of one seat, Labor scored a 13-seat swing, giving it a strong majority of 63 seats. Labor even managed to defeat the Leader of the Opposition, Peter Coleman, in his own electorate. The seats of many other prominent Shadow Ministers fell to Labor as well. Labor also won took many seats in areas long reckoned as Coalition heartland. Vaucluse is an New South Wales Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, based on the suburb of Vaucluse, New South Wales, Vaucluse. Vaucluse is one of two original (post 1927 redistribution) electorates to have never been held by the opposing party and always by the Liberal Party or its predecessors, the other district being Electoral district of Hornsby, Hornsby. Harry Budd
Sir Harry Vincent Budd (18 February 1900 – 8 March 1979) was an Australian politician. He was born at Murwillumbah to Arthur Budd, later a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, and Annie Knight. He attended the local public school and worked as a journalist, editing the ''Tweed Daily'' from 1921 to 1923, when he was taken on by the Sydney ''Daily Telegraph''. From 1931 to 1971 he was managing editor of '' The Land''. On 25 January 1930 he married Colina McDonald White; they had four children. Edward Warren (politician)
Sir Edward Emerton Warren, (26 August 1897 – 8 September 1983) was an Australian politician. Warren was born in Broken Hill to mine manager John Warren. He was educated locally and in North Sydney, and was an office boy in a colliery firm from 1914. From 1915 to 1919 he served in the Australian Imperial Force, being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. On his return he rejoined the colliery firm, and eventually rose to become general manager in 1945. In 1955 he was the foundation chairman of the Australian Coal Association, serving until 1972. From 1955 to 1978 Warren was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1956, a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1959, and a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1969. Bob Scott (New South Wales Politician)
Walter Robert "Bob" Scott (born 23 April 1943) is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1974 to 1978. Scott was born in Maitland and attended Maitland Boys' High School and Morpeth Grammar School. He subsequently became a dairy farmer and salesman with Shortland City Council, before directing a small family company in the area. A member of the Liberal Party, he contested the 1965 and 1968 elections for Gloucester as an , where the Coalition agreement prevented the Liberal Party from endorsing a candidate against the sitting member. In 1974, Scott was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council, filling a casual vacancy caused by the death of independent MLC Harry Gardiner. He served until the 1978 state election, when the reduction in the Council's size led him to lose his place on the Coalition's ticket. Anne Press
Anne Elizabeth Press, ''née'' Speechley (25 August 1903 – 23 August 1992) was an Australian politician. She was born at Dubbo to farmers Thomas and Charlotte Speechley. She was educated privately before training at Sydney Teachers College, thereafter teaching at Condobolin (1922–23), Tichborne (1923–24) and Forbes (1924–25). On 1 September 1924 she married Thomas F. Press, a farmer, with whom she had three children. She was on the council of the New South Wales Parents and Citizens Federation from 1950 to 1953 and vice-president from 1953 to 1960, and was director of the Condobolin Hospital Board from 1953 to 1978. In 1959, Press was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council as a member of the Labor Party. However, she opposed the Labor policy of abolishing the Legislative Council, and together with a number of other Labor MLCs was expelled from the party shortly after her election; these members formed the Independent Labor Group. Thomas McKay (Australian Politician)
Thomas Sidney McKay (1 October 1909 – 5 January 2004) was an Australian golfer, barrister and politician. Early life McKay was born in Mosman to journalist Claude Eric Ferguson McKay and Dorothy Hope Sidney. He went to the Shore School before studying at the University of Sydney where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1931 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1934. He was an amateur golfer and on 2 August 1934 he married Odette Anita Madeline Lefebvre, who was also a golf champion, having won the NSW State championship in 1931 and 1933. They had two children before divorcing in 1946. He married a second time to Peggy Burleigh on 28 October 1949, and they had a daughter. Richard Kelynack Evans, (3 April 1922 – 5 June 2008) was an Australian politician who was born in Sydney to grazier Robert Fitzgerald Evans and Helen Madge Kelynack. He was educated at The King's School in Parramatta and became a grazier at Rylstone, with additional property in Queensland. From 1941 to 1945 he served in the Royal Australian Air Force as a fighter pilot, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945. From 1959 to 1969 he was a member of Rylstone Shire Council, serving as president from 1961 to 1969 and from 1979 to 1986. Stanley Eskell
Stanley Louis Mowbray Eskell, ED (4 January 1918 – 6 June 2000) was an Australian politician. He was born in Perth, Western Australia, to clerk Stanley Herbert Eskell and Muriel Kerr. He attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon and in 1939 was a lieutenant in the Staff Corps. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the Second Australian Imperial Force, being promoted to major and mentioned in despatches in 1942. In 1944 he went to the United States Army staff school at Fort Leavenworth, and for the remainder of the war was part of the Australian Military Mission in Washington, D.C. After the war he was managing director of a number of companies, and in 1958 he entered the New South Wales Legislative Council as a Liberal Party member. Thomas Reginald Erskine (26 March 1917 – 7 June 2008) was an Australian politician. He was born in Griffith to fruit farmers John Channon and Kate Mary Gertrude Erskine. He was educated locally and followed his father as an orchardist, moving into rice, cattle and wheat from 1954. During World War II he served in the AIF, achieving the rank of lieutenant and being awarded the Military Cross. Albury is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is currently held by Justin Clancy of the Liberal Party. Albury is a regional electorate in the state's south. It encompasses the local government areas of the City of Albury, Greater Hume Shire, Federation Council, part of Murrumbidgee Council, part of Snowy Valleys Council that includes the town of Cabramurra. Its significant population centres include Albury, Culcairn, Jindera, Corowa, Howlong, Holbrook, Jerilderie and Tumbarumba. History Albury was first created in 1880 from part of Hume and is named after the city of Albury.
