1955 Victorian State Election
The 1955 Victorian state election was held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 28 May 1955 to elect 65 (of the 66) members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The incumbent Labor Party Government was defeated by the Liberal and Country Party (LCP) led by Henry Bolte with a swing of 14.6%. Background John Cain had led the Labor Party in Victoria since 1937, and had been Premier since defeating John McDonald's Country Party government at the 1952 election, forming the first majority Labor government in Victoria's history. The leader of the opposition Liberal and Country Party, Trevor Oldham, had died on 2 May 1953 in a plane crash on his way to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. James Dunn (Victorian Politician)
James Hector McRae Dunn (22 April 1886 – 8 November 1975) was an Australian politician. He was born in Cathkin to farmer James Dunn and Honoria McRae. He attended state school and Scotch College, Melbourne, becoming the paymaster of a coal mine at Wonthaggi, where he was a founding member of the local Coal Miners' Union. In 1906 he married Mary Buchanan, with whom he had five children. He later worked for the railways, and was stores administrator for the Federal Capital Commission's construction branch from 1915. There he organised the first Labor Party branch in the Australian Capital Territory. From 1932 he ran a wine saloon in Geelong, and was private secretary to John Dedman, a federal minister. In 1950, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Geelong. John Joseph "Jack" Holland (3 September 1877 – 25 December 1955) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1925 to 1955, representing the electorates of Flemington (1925-1945), Footscray (1945-1955) and Flemington again (1955). Holland was born in Carlton to police officer Thomas Holland and Johanna Quigley. He worked as a fitter and then as an electrical engineer for the Postmaster-General's Department. He was a life member of both the Australian Postal Electricians Union, serving as its secretary and president at various times, as well as its delegate to the Melbourne Trades Hall Council and the Victorian Agricultural Implement Union, of which he had been president. He was also secretary of the Flemington branch of the Labor Party from 1911 to 1932, served on the boards of a number of local co-operatives and on the Victorian Public Servants Credit Co-operative board for 35 years. George Michael Harrington Fewster (6 December 1896 – 15 January 1970), Australian politician, was a Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Essendon representing the Labor Party from 1950 to 1955 and the Australian Labor Party (Anti-Communist) (later the Democratic Labor Party) from March–April 1955. The electoral district of Essendon is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first created in 1904 after the abolition of the larger Essendon and Flemington electorate, and covers some of the north-western suburbs of Melbourne, including Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale. The electorate was abolished in 1955, and Ascot Vale created, but in 1958, Ascot Vale was abolished and Essendon re-created. Essendon was held by the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer governments, usually due to preferences from the Democratic Labor Party. The Liberals also won the seat after the Kennett landslide of 1992.
