Canberra Airport is an international airport situated in the District of Majura, Australian Capital Territory serving Australia's capital city, Canberra, as well as the nearby city of Queanbeyan and regional areas of the Australian Capital Territory, and southeastern New South Wales. Located approximately from the city centre, within the North Canberra district, it is the eighth-busiest airport in Australia. The airport serves direct flights to all Australian state capitals, as well as to many regional centres across the Australian east coast. Direct international links previously operated from Canberra to Singapore and Wellington. While flights to Qatar also use to operate via Sydney. Canberra Airport handled 3,217,391 passengers in the 2018–19 financial year. The Australian Capital Territory (commonly abbreviated as ACT), known as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) until 1938, is a landlocked federal territory of Australia containing the national capital Canberra and some surrounding townships. It is located in southeastern Australian mainland as an enclave completely within the state of New South Wales. Founded after Federation as the seat of government for the new nation, the territory hosts the headquarters of all important institutions of the Australian Government. On 1 January 1901, federation of the colonies of Australia was achieved. Section 125 of the new Australian Constitution provided that land, situated in New South Wales and at least from Sydney, would be ceded to the new federal government.
