Ernest Shipman
Ernest G. Shipman (December 16, 1871, in Shipman's Mills (now Almonte), Ontario, Canada – August 7, 1931, in New York City) was Canada's most successful film producer during the silent period. Shipman, whose nickname was "Ten Percent Ernie," made seven features from 1919 to 1923. Biography Shipman was educated at the Ryerson School (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in Toronto and became interested in promotion and publicity. At 26 he was running the Canadian Entertainment Bureau in Toronto and soon after was the president and general manager of the Amalgamated Amusement Company with offices on Broadway in New York City. In 1912, he divorced his third wife, actress Roselle Knott, and married his fourth wife, Nell (born Helen Barham) from Victoria, B.C., who was 18 at the time. Ernest and Nell Shipman travelled to California in 1912, where he promoted films written by and starring his young wife. Wheeler Oakman
Wheeler Oakman (born Vivian Eichelberger; February 21, 1890 – March 19, 1949) was an American film actor. Early years Oakman was born as Vivian Eichelberger in Washington, D.C., and educated in that city's schools. He grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, after moving there from Washington. Career Before acting in films, Oakman was active in stock theater in the eastern United States. Oakman appeared in over 280 films between 1912 and 1948. In silent films, he was often a leading man. Among his leading ladies were Priscilla Dean, Kathlyn Williams, Colleen Moore and Annette Kellerman. His most successful movie was ''Mickey'', a 1918 comedy-drama, in which he played the love interest of Mabel Normand. Nell Shipman
Nell Shipman (born Helen Foster-Barham; October 25, 1892 – January 23, 1970) was a Canadian actress, author, screenwriter, producer, director, animal rights activist and animal trainer. Her works often had autobiographical elements to them and reflected her passion for nature. She is best known for her work in adventure films adapted from the novels of American writer, James Oliver Curwood. Shipman started two independent producing companies in her career: Shipman-Curwood Producing Company and Nell Shipman Productions. Back To God's Country (1919 Film)
''Back to God's Country'' is a 1919 Canadian drama film directed by David Hartford. It is one of the earliest Canadian feature films. The film starred and was co-written by Canadian actress Nell Shipman. With an estimated budget of over $67,000, it was the most successful silent film in Canadian history. The film is noteworthy as it starred Shipman and was produced by her husband, Ernest. Shipman was one of the first women to do a nude scene on screen in the movie. In 1918, they created a production company, Shipman-Curwood Producing Company, to produce ''Back to God's Country''. The film was the only film the company would produce, and was based on a short story, "Whapi, the Walrus", by James Oliver Curwood. Curwood's story was adapted to the screen by Nell herself. She changed the protagonist of the film from a great dane to the female lead, Dolores. Shipman also shaped her character into a heroine, who saves her husband.
