Canadian Open (tennis)
The Canadian Open (french: Tournoi de tennis du Canada; also known as the Canada Masters, and currently branded as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers for sponsorship reasons) is an annual professional tennis tournament held in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. It is played on outdoor hard courts. The men's competition is an ATP Masters 1000 event on the ATP Tour, and the women's competition is a WTA 1000 event on the WTA Tour. It is the second-oldest active tennis tournament after Wimbledon. Prior to 2011, the two competitions were held during separate weeks in the July–August period; now the two competitions are held during the same week in August. The events alternate each year between the cities of Montreal and Toronto. Since 2021, in even-numbered years the men's tournament is held in Montreal while the women's tournament is held in Toronto, and vice-versa in odd-numbered years. The ATP Masters 1000 tournaments (previously known as ATP Masters Series) is an annual series of nine tennis tournaments featuring the top-ranked players on the ATP Tour. The series' events have been held in Europe and North America since the inception of ATP Tour in 1990, and also in Asia since 2009. The ATP Masters tournaments along with the Grand Slam tournaments and the Year-end Championships make up the most coveted trophies on the annual ATP Tour calendar, in addition to the Olympics, hence they are collectively known as the 'Big Titles'. Rothmans International
Rothmans International plc was a British tobacco manufacturer. Its brands included Rothmans, Player's and Dunhill. Its international headquarters were in Hill Street, London and its international operations were run from Denham Place in Denham Village, Buckinghamshire. The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but it was acquired by British American Tobacco in 1999. The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. World Championship Tennis
World Championship Tennis (WCT) was a tour for professional male tennis players established in 1968 (the first players signed a contract at the end of 1967) and lasted until the emergence of the ATP Tour in 1990. A number of tennis tournaments around the world were affiliated with WCT and players were ranked in a special WCT ranking according to their results in those tournaments. The WCT had an important impact on the commercial development of tennis. It instituted a tie-breaker system and outfitted players with colored clothing, a radical idea at that time. The Wimbledon Championships, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. The Toronto Lawn Tennis Club is a private social and athletic club in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1876, it has a long history of tennis competition. It is located at 44 Price Street, in the affluent Rosedale neighbourhood of Toronto. The club hosted the first ever National Tennis Championship of Canada and has hosted 2 Davis Cup ties. Rexall was a chain of American drugstores, and the name of their store-branded products. The stores, having roots in the federation of United Drug Stores starting in 1903, licensed the Rexall brand name to as many as 12,000 drug stores across the United States from 1920 to 1977. The "Rex" in the name was derived from the name of Ellen M. Regis, who developed "Rexall remedies" and from whom the company purchased the mark. Founding In 1903, Louis K. Liggett persuaded 40 independent drug stores to invest $4,000 in a retailers' cooperative called United Drug Stores, which sold products under the Rexall name. Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (; born June 16, 2000) is a Canadian professional tennis player. She has a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world, and is the highest-ranked Canadian in the history of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Robert Bédard (tennis)
Robert Bédard (born 13 September 1931) is a Canadian former tennis player and educator. He is the most recent Canadian winner of the Canadian Open Tennis Championships. Bédard was considered among the top ten clay court players in the world and was the top-ranked Canadian singles player in ten years between 1955 and 1965. Bédard won three Canadian Open singles titles in 1955 (over Henri Rochon in the final), 1957 (over Ramanathan Krishnan in the final) and 1958 (over Whitney Reed in the final). Bédard won a record seven Quebec Open singles championships and two Ontario Open singles titles. He won the U.S. Eastern Clay Court Championships in 1960.
