Canadian League Of Rights
The Canadian League of Rights (CLR) was the Canadian offshoot of Eric Butler's Australian League of Rights. Following speaking tours of Canada in the mid-1960s, Eric Butler sought to establish of a local version of his organisation. The CLR was formed in 1968. The CLR was run for most of its existence by Ron Gostick and Patrick Walsh. Like its sister organisations, the CLR adheres to social credit and anti-semitism. AcademiStanley Barrett author of ''Is God a Racist? The Right Wing in Canada'' and various studies race and ethnicity in Canada, suggested that the CLR had 10,000 members at its peak. The CLR was described as "one of Canada's largest and best organized anti-Semitic groups" in the 1987 book ''A Trust Betrayed''. A notable member was Jim Keegstra. Eric Butler
Eric Dudley Butler (7 May 1916 – 7 June 2006) was an Australian political activist and journalist, who in 1946 founded the far-right Australian League of Rights, which he led until 1992. He was known as a staunch anti-communist and virulent anti-Semite. He died in Victoria in 2006, aged 90. Background and early career Butler was born in the Victorian country town of Benalla, although he lived most of his life near Melbourne. In the 1930s he became a follower of the British economist C. H. Douglas and his Social Credit theories. From 1938 Butler wrote for the Australian Social Credit newspaper ''New Times''. Butler served in the Australian Army during World War II. Canadian Social Credit Movement
The Canadian social credit movement is a political movement originally based on the Social Credit theory of Major C. H. Douglas. Its supporters were colloquially known as Socreds in English and créditistes in French. It gained popularity and its own political party in the 1930s, as a result of the Great Depression. Federal politics The Western Social Credit League, an outgrowth of Alberta Social Credit, ran candidates in the 1935 federal election taking many votes from the Progressive Party of Canada and the United Farmers movement. In the 1940 federal election, Socreds ran with supporters of William Duncan Herridge as New Democracy, but reverted to the Social Credit name in subsequent elections with the Social Credit Association of Canada being officially formed in 1944. New Zealand League Of Rights
The New Zealand League of Rights was the New Zealand offshoot of Eric Butler's Australian League of Rights. Following speaking tours of New Zealand in the late 1960s, Eric Butler sought to establish a local version of his organisation. A New Zealand League of Rights was announced in 1970 but did not become operational until 1971. Its first director and co-founder was Sidney Wood. In 1979, David Thompson became its director and revitalised the organisation, publishing a New Zealand version of ''On Target''. The League increased its membership during the 1980s. Thompson was succeeded in the mid-1980s by Bill Daly who ran the League till its end. The organisation ceased activity in 2004. Like the parent organisation, the NZ League proclaimed its "loyalty to God, Queen and Country". The British League of Rights was an offshoot of the Australian League of Rights founded in 1971. It was an "anti-semitic and white supremacist" Peter Barberis, John McHugh, Mike Tyldesley (editors) entry in ''Encyclopedia of British and Irish Political Organizations'' Pinter (2000) p177 political group. The British League opposed the entry of the UK into the European Economic Community. David John Cawdell Irving (born 24 March 1938) is an English author and Holocaust denier who has written on the military and political history of World War II, with a focus on Nazi Germany. Holocaust denial is an antisemitic conspiracy theory that falsely asserts that the Nazi genocide of Jews, known as the Holocaust, is a myth, fabrication, or exaggeration. Jim Keegstra
James "Jim" Keegstra (March 30, 1934 – June 2, 2014) was a public school teacher and mayor in Eckville, Alberta, Canada, who was charged and convicted of hate speech in 1984. The conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal of Alberta but reinstated by the Supreme Court of Canada in ''R v Keegstra''. The decision received substantial international attention and became a landmark Canadian legal case upholding the constitutionality of Canada's hate speech laws.
