The House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs (INAN) is a standing committee of the House of Commons of Canada. It was formerly known as the House of Commons Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Mandate The Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs was established by the then new Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (now Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada), in 1968. Although the mandate has changed many times, it is current, as of the 43rd Parliament. The committee may study any issue of the department's management and operation, as well as any legislation, programs or policy areas. The department has taken responsibility primarily for on-reserve registered First Nations people, Inuit and northern or territorial affairs including considered legislation and issues related to these populations and subjects. In Canada, a standing committee is a permanent committee established by Standing Orders in the House of Commons or the Senate. It may study matters referred to it by special order or, within its area of responsibility in the Standing Orders, may undertake studies on its own initiative. There are currently 23 standing committees (including two standing joint committees) in the House and 20 in the Senate, many with particular responsibilities to examine the administration, policy development, and budgetary estimates of certain government departments and agencies. Jaime Battiste (born 1979) is a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the riding of Sydney—Victoria in the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Liberal Party in the 2019 Canadian federal election. Arnold Viersen (born May 3, 1986) is a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the riding of Peace River—Westlock in the 2015 Canadian federal election. Milton is a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that consists of the town of Milton and part of Burlington which has a population growing much faster than the Ontario average. It was created by the 2012 federal redistribution and previously part of Halton. Redistributed results showed that Conservative Lisa Raitt won the area easily in 2011, although her vote share dropped in the 2015 election and the Liberals took the riding in 2019.
