A sports governing body is a sports organization that has a regulatory or sanctioning function. Sports governing bodies come in various forms and have a variety of regulatory functions. Examples of this can include disciplinary action for rule infractions and deciding on rule changes in the sport that they govern. Governing bodies have different scopes. DanceSport Alberta is the governing body for amateur ballroom dance competition in Alberta, Canada. It is a member of the Canadian Amateur DanceSport Association. DanceSport Alberta was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization. In addition to Alberta, it has jurisdiction over Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, which do not have their own amateur associations.
