Canadian (including Canadian Lakes) is a suburb east of the regional city of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia on the rural-urban fringe. At the , Canadian had a population of 4,098. It is primarily a residential area, but has a school, a small shopping area, and several parks and reserves including Canadian Lake and also Sparrow Ground, which has been the subject of much community debate. The suburb was originally named Canadian Gully after Canadian immigrant gold digger "Captain" Henry Ross, famous for his role in the Eureka Rebellion. History Canadian Post Office opened on 1 March 1886 and closed in 1988. Today Canadian Lakes, an exclusively residential area was developed in early 2000. Ballarat ( ) is a city in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia. At the 2021 Census, Ballarat had a population of 116,201, making it the third largest city in Victoria. Mount Clear, Victoria
Mount Clear is a semi-rural suburb of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia south of the CBD in the Canadian Creek Valley. At the , Mount Clear had a population of 3,671. Mount Clear is characterised by its topography of gently undulating hills flanked by bush and pine plantation forestry. Canadian Creek, on the suburb's eastern border, flows southward. It began as a small mining community, however it expanded rapidly in the latter 20th Century to become part of the Ballarat urban area and much subdivision activity continues. The suburb is organised on a street hierarchy with the main roads through it being Midland Highway/Geelong Road (north-south) and Sebastopol Road (east-west). Eureka Rebellion
The Eureka Rebellion was a series of events involving gold miners who revolted against the British administration of the colony of Victoria, Australia during the Victorian gold rush. It culminated in the Battle of the Eureka Stockade, which took place on 3 December 1854 at Ballarat between the rebels and the colonial forces of Australia. The fighting resulted in an official total of 27 deaths and many injuries, the majority of casualties being rebels. There was a preceding period beginning in 1851 of peaceful demonstrations and civil disobedience on the Victorian goldfields. The miners had various grievances, chiefly the cost of mining permits and the officious way the system was enforced. Mass public support led to the acquittal of 13 captured rebels at their high treason trials in Melbourne. Henry Ross
Henry Ross (1829 – 5 December 1854) was a Canadian-Australian gold miner who died in the Eureka Rebellion at the Ballarat gold fields in the British History of Victoria, Colony of Victoria, now the state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria in Australia. Ross is particularly remembered for his part in the creation of the rebel miners' flag, since named the Eureka Flag. Ross was born in Toronto, in the British colony of Upper Canada which had amalgamated into the colonial Province of Canada by the time he departed. He became a gold miner in California during the California Gold Rush, gold rush and probably arrived at Melbourne on the ''Magnolia'' in November 1852, along with Charles Doudiet and three other Canadians. Sovereign Hill is an open-air museum in Golden Point, a suburb of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Sovereign Hill depicts Ballarat's first ten years after the discovery of gold there in 1851.
