Canada–Romania Relations
Canadian-Romanian relations are the bilateral relations between the governments of Canada and Romania. Canada has an embassy in Bucharest. Romania has an embassy in Ottawa and three consulates-general (in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver). Romania has also three honorary consulate general in Moncton, Québec and Calgary. The two countries are members of Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, La Francophonie and NATO. History Clifford Sifton visited Bukovina in 1895. From 1912 to 1913 Robert W. Service was a correspondent for the ''Toronto Star'' during the Balkan Wars. Joseph W. Boyle served the king and queen of Romania during the World War I, helping to protect the country from the Central Powers and to operate Romania's railways. Embassy Of Canada In Bucharest
The Embassy of Canada to Romania in Bucharest is the diplomatic mission of Canada to Romania. The embassy provides consular services to Canadian citizens residing or travelling in Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova. History Canada appointed its first resident ambassador to Romania in 1967. A new four-storey chancery building was inaugurated in December 2006 and is located at 1-3, Tuberozelor Street in Bucharest. Its striking architecture includes pre-oxidized copper panels on two building faces. On June 15, 2009, Lawrence Cannon, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the appointment of Philippe Beaulne as Ambassador to Romania, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Bulgaria, and High Commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus. A correspondent or on-the-scene reporter is usually a journalist or commentator for a magazine, or an agent who contributes reports to a newspaper, or radio or television news, or another type of company, from a remote, often distant, location. A foreign correspondent is stationed in a foreign country. The term "correspondent" refers to the original practice of filing news reports via postal letter. The largest networks of correspondents belong to ARD (Germany) and BBC (UK). Vs. reporter In Britain, the term 'correspondent' usually refers to someone with a specific specialist area, such as health correspondent. A 'reporter' is usually someone without such expertise who is allocated stories by the newsdesk on any story in the news. Atomic Energy Of Canada Limited
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is a Canadian federal Crown corporation and Canada's largest nuclear science and technology laboratory. AECL developed the CANDU reactor technology starting in the 1950s, and in October 2011 licensed this technology to Candu Energy (a wholly owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin). Today AECL develops peaceful applications from nuclear technology through expertise in physics, metallurgy, chemistry, biology and engineering. AECL's activities range from research and development, design and engineering to specialized technology development, waste management and decommissioning. Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant
The Nuclear Power Plant in Cernavodă ( ro, Centrala Nucleară de la Cernavodă) is the only nuclear power plant in Romania. It produces around 20% of the country's electricity. It uses CANDU reactor technology from AECL, using heavy water produced at Drobeta-Turnu Severin as its neutron moderator and as its coolant agent. The Danube water is not used for cooling of the active zone (nuclear fuel). By using nuclear power, Romania is able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by over 10 million tonnes each year. The project began in 1978, and the power plant was designed in Canada by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in the 1980s, and was contracted during the Communist era. The initial plan was to build four units, and schedule their startup from 1985 onward.
