Canadian Olympic Committee
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC; french: Comité olympique canadien) is a private, non-profit organization that represents Canada at the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is also a member of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). History While Canadian athletes first competed at the Olympic Games at Paris 1900 followed by St. Louis 1904, it was not until 1907 that the IOC officially recognized a National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Canada. Earl Thomson
Earl John "Tommy" Thomson (February 15, 1895 – May 19, 1971) was a Canadian athlete, a specialist in the high hurdles. In 1920 he became the first Olympic gold medalist in 110 m hurdles from outside the United States. Biography Born in Birch Hills, Northwest Territories (now in Saskatchewan), Thomson moved to southern California at age 8, because the warm weather would be better for his mother. Thomson attended Long Beach Poly, where he won the 120 yard hurdles at the first CIF California State Meet in 1915. He also was second in the high jump and fourth in the discus throw. In 1916 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, and served there during World War I. He then went to the University of Southern California for one year and then transferred to Dartmouth College. Diving At The 1920 Summer Olympics – Men's 3 Metre Springboard
The men's 3 metre springboard was one of five diving events on the diving at the 1920 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was held on Friday, 26 August 1920 and on Saturday, 27 August 1920, at the Stade Nautique d'Antwerp. A point-for-place system was used. For each dive, the divers were ranked according to their dive score and awarded points based on their rank for that dive (the best dive earned 1 point, the next-best 2 points, and so on). Fourteen divers from nine nations competed. Louis Kuehn from the United States won the gold medal. Clarence Pinkston took silver and Louis Balbach won bronze, making a full American podium. Moe Herscovitch
Moe 'Montgomery' Hart Herscovitch (27 October 1897 – 22 July 1969) was a Canadian middleweight and welterweight boxer who competed in the early 1920s. He was also a prominent rugby football player in Montreal. Early life Born in either Romania or Canada (sources differ) to Jewish parents, Vetra 'William' and Anna Herscovitch, he emigrated with his family to Montréal, Canada. He anglicised his given name to 'Montgomery,' but was known to everyone as 'Moe.' Although short in stature at 5' 6", he was incredibly athletic. He played football with the Montreal Football Club of the Inter-Provincial Rugby Union until 1915 when it was disbanded due to the increasing hostilities of World War I. Service in WWI Eager to do his part in WWI, Herscovitch joined the 66th Battery, Canadian Expeditionary Forces. George Vernot
George Edward Vernot (February 27, 1901 – November 22, 1962) was a Canadian freestyle swimmer who competed at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Vernot won a silver medal in the 1500-metre freestyle, and a bronze medal in the 400-metre event. He also competed in the 100-metre freestyle, but placed third in his semifinal and did not advance. At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, he was seventh in the 400-metre freestyle, and eighth in the 1500-metre freestyle. Nationally, Vernot won the Canadian championships in the 100-, 220-, and 440-yard freestyle in 1919, and 220- and 440-yard in 1920. In 1926 he graduated in civil engineering from McGill University and retired from athletic competitions. He then worked for the City of Montreal, becoming chairman of the Board of Assessors in 1948. Georges Prud'Homme
Joseph Arthur Prud'Homme (March 12, 1898 – January 7, 1978) was a Canadian middleweight boxer who competed in the early 1920s. He won a silver medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics, losing to British boxer Harry Mallin in the final. Prud'Homme later moved to Plamondon, Alberta and died in Athabasca, Alberta in 1978. Clifford "Chris" J. Graham (18 March 1900 – 24 May 1986) was a Canadian boxer, born in Toronto, who competed in the 1920s. As a bantamweight, he won the silver medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics, losing to Clarence Walker in the final. Four years later in Paris, he once again represented his native country at the Summer Olympics. This time he was eliminated in the second round of the lightweight class after losing his fight to Ben Rothwell.
