Campus Compact
Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents, committed to fulfilling the public purposes of higher education. Nearly 1,100 educational institutions, more than a third of all higher education providers in the United States, are members. The non-profit comprises a national office located in Boston, MA as well as state and regional compact offices to support the work of member colleges. Campus Compact has members mostly throughout the United States, but also has members in many US Territories and countries outside of the US as well. History The Compact was co-founded in 1985 by the presidents of Brown, Georgetown and Stanford universities, and Frank Newman, the former president of the Education Commission of the States. Frank Newman (educator)
Frank James Newman, Jr. (February 24, 1927 – May 29, 2004) was a US education reformer and administrator who produced the Newman Reports, two ground-breaking reports on higher education in the United States that were published in 1971 and 1974. He served as the eighth President of the University of Rhode Island (1974–1983). After a period as a fellow for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, he co-founded Campus Compact in 1985. Newman was president for 14 years from 1985 to 1999 of the Education Commission of the States. He then founded the Futures Project at Brown University and taught there and at Teachers College, Columbia University. AmeriCorps Organizations
AmeriCorps (officially the Corporation for National and Community Service or CNCS) is an independent agency of the United States government that engages more than five million Americans in service through a variety of stipended volunteer work programs in many sectors. Experiential Learning
Experiential learning (ExL) is the process of learning through experience, and is more narrowly defined as "learning through reflection on doing". Downtown Crossing
Downtown Crossing is a shopping district within downtown Boston, Massachusetts, located east of Boston Common, west of the Financial District, south of Government Center, and north of Chinatown and the old Combat Zone. It features large department stores as well as restaurants, souvenir sellers, general retail establishments, and street vendors. The Downtown Crossing MBTA station lies in the center of the district. Service-learning is an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service in order to provide a pragmatic, progressive learning experience while meeting societal needs. Service-learning involves students in service projects to apply classroom learning for local agencies that exist to effect positive change in the community.
