Campbellfield Railway Station
Campbellfield was a former railway station on the Upfield railway line between Upfield and Gowrie, located in the suburb of Campbellfield, Victoria, just to the north of the level crossing A level crossing is an intersection where a railway line crosses a road, Trail, path, or (in rare situations) airport runway, at the same level, as opposed to the railway line crossing over or under using an Overpass#Railway, overpass ... at Camp Road. The station opened in 1889, and closed when passenger service ceased in 1956. The primitive Mallee Shed, which provided the only passenger accommodation, was removed, and no trace of the station remained. In 2006, it was suggested that that the station might be rebuilt in the not-too-distant future, due to the existence of the Campbellfield Plaza shopping centre nearby, but nothing concrete came of that. Upfield Railway Line
The Upfield railway line is a commuter rail service operating between Flinders Street in the Melbourne central business district through Melbourne's northern suburbs including West Melbourne, North Melbourne, Parkville, Brunswick, Coburg, Coburg North, Hadfield, Glenroy and Coolaroo. The future of the Upfield line was in serious doubt in the late 1980s and early 1990s with proposals for the line to be converted into a light rail line or even closure. However, the future of the line was secured in 1995 with the upgrading of the signalling, closure or upgrade of the numerous level crossings, and duplication of the track between Fawkner and Gowrie. Infrastructure The line is double track as far as Gowrie station, with the final section to Upfield station being single track. List Of Closed Railway Stations In Melbourne
A number of railway lines and stations which formed part of the greater Melbourne railway network have been closed over time, either in part or in full. The decision to close a railway station has historically been made by the department responsible for rail transport within the Government of Victoria. Over the history of the Melbourne railway network, a total of eleven complete railway lines, as well as 71 railway stations, have been closed. The most recent railway station to close is General Motors, which closed on 28 July 2002, due to a lack of pedestrian access; while the most recent railway line to close to traffic is the Port Melbourne railway line, which was closed on 11 October 1987, and was subsequently converted to light rail. Gowrie Railway Station
Gowrie railway station is located on the Upfield line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the northern Melbourne suburb of Fawkner, and it opened on 16 October 1928 as Rail Motor Stopping Place 21. It closed on 5 May 1956, and reopened on 17 May 1965 as Gowrie. History Gowrie station originally opened as a Rail Motor Stopping Place on 16 October 1928, following the reinstatement of a passenger service on the Fawkner – Somerton line in March of that year. It closed when the passenger service ceased on 5 May 1956. On 17 May 1965, it opened in its current form, on what was by then the Upfield line. The name of the station comes from a grazing property named ''Gowrie Park'', which was named by the owner, who was originally from Gowrie, England. Campbellfield, Victoria
Campbellfield is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Hume local government area. Campbellfield recorded a population of 4,977 at the 2021 census. History Campbellfield was named after two unrelated families named Campbell brough farm lots in the area in the 1840s. The land at that time was lightly timbered, which made it easy for grazing, plus also due to its proximity to the Merri Creek. The first Broadmeadows Post Office was open briefly in 1854 in Campbellfield. It reopened on 1 June 1856 and closed in 1893, replaced by the Campbellfield railway station office.
