Campaspe River (Queensland)
The Campaspe River is a long tributary of Cape River in Queensland, Australia near Charters Towers. It rises at Homestead and flows southeasterly through Pentland to Campaspe where it joins the Cape River. Tributaries includes Homestead Creek, Balfe Creek and Policeman Creek. There are no major settlements along its course. The river is crossed by the Flinders Highway. Its catchment area remains undeveloped. Charters Towers is a rural town in the Charters Towers Region, Queensland, Australia. It is by road south-west from Townsville on the Flinders Highway. During the last quarter of the 19th century, the town boomed as the rich gold deposits under the city were developed. Homestead is a rural town and locality in the Charters Towers Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Homestead had a population of 48 people. Geography The Flinders Highway traverses from east to south-west through the locality, passing through the town which is located in the east of the locality. The Great Northern railway line follows a similar route parallel and immediately south of the highway with the Homestead railway station servicing the town. History In 1883, gold was discovered to the north of the town but it was not regarded as an important discovery and it was mined sporadically over the next 50 years. Campaspe is a rural locality in the Charters Towers Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Campaspe had a population of 123 people. Balfes Creek is a very small town within the locality. History The former railway station of Balfes Creek, on the Great Northern railway line, which was opened in 1884, was in the locality. A crossing loop is located in the immediate vicinity. In 1942 work started on the construction of an airfield at Balfes Creek for defence purposes. An earth strip running parallel to the road and railway was cleared and levelled, but defence priorities changed and it was never sealed. In the Campaspe had a population of 123 people. Flinders Highway, Queensland
The Flinders Highway is a highway that crosses Queensland east to west, from Townsville on the Pacific coast to Cloncurry. The road continues as the Barkly Highway from Cloncurry to the Northern Territory border at Camooweal and beyond. The Flinders Highway passes a number of small outback towns and typical outback landscape predominates towards the inland. It was known as National Route 78 before Queensland began to convert to the alphanumeric system being adopted in Australia and is now designated as A6. The highway is also known as Overlanders Way. Its entire length is part of the National Land Transport Network (formerly Auslink). As at 1957, only the Townsville to Charters Towers section was sealed.
