Camp McGarry
Camp McGarry was a U.S. military camp located in what is now the Summit Lake Indian Reservation in Humboldt County, Nevada. History Camp McGarry was established as a field camp on November 23, 1865. It was named for Brevet Brigadier General Edward McGarry. With a size of it was, at the time, the largest military reserve in Nevada. In 1866 the headquarters of the district of Nevada were moved from Fort Churchill to Camp McGarry. In the summer of 1868, the bulk of the troops were moved from Camp McGarry, with the camp being abandoned on December 18, 1868. Humboldt County is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 17,285. It is a largely rural county that is sparsely populated with the only major city being Winnemucca which has a population of 8,431. Humboldt County comprises the Winnemucca, NV Micropolitan Statistical Area and serves as an important crossroads in the national transportation network. Interstate 80 travels through the southeastern corner of the county, meeting US 95 in Winnemucca that serves as a primary freight corridor between Northern Nevada and Boise, Idaho and the Interstate 84 freight corridor that links much of the Pacific Northwest. Edward McGarry (soldier-politician)
Edward McGarry (1820 – December 31, 1867) was an officer in the Mexican American War, a Californian politician, and officer of California Volunteers in the American Civil War. He led cavalry at the Bear River Massacre, was later colonel of the 2nd California Cavalry, and later commander of the District of California. He received a brevet promotion to brigadier general of volunteers. After the Civil War he rejoined the U. S. Army as a lieutenant colonel. Edward McGarry was a native of New York, who served as a second lieutenant in the Mexican–American War with the U. S. 10th Infantry Regiment. He saw no action except as part of the garrison army before the peace took effect. McGarry left the Army and traveled to California after the end of the war and became involved in California politics serving as an assemblyman from Napa County's 20th District from 1853 to 1854. Fort Churchill State Historic Park
Fort Churchill State Historic Park is a state park of Nevada, United States, preserving the remains of a United States Army fort and a waystation on the Pony Express and Central Overland Routes dating back to the 1860s. The site is one end of the historic Fort Churchill and Sand Springs Toll Road. The park is in Lyon County south of the town of Silver Springs, on U.S. Route 95 Alternate, south of U.S. Route 50. Fort Churchill was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. A 1994 park addition forms a corridor along the Carson River.
