Camino Real In New Mexico
The Camino Real in New Mexico was the northern part of a historic roadway known as the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro that from 1598 ran from Mexico City northward through central and northern Mexico and the Trans-Pecos part of what is now Texas to San Juan Pueblo (''Ohkay Owingeh'') in Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, now the state of New Mexico. Road sections on the National Register of Historic Places Fourteen sections of the Camino Real (El Camino Real) in New Mexico were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2018. The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro ( en, Royal Road of the Interior Land), also known as the Silver Route, was a Spanish road between Mexico City and San Juan Pueblo (''Ohkay Owingeh''), New Mexico, USA, that was used from 1598 to 1882. It was the northernmost of the four major "royal roads" that linked Mexico City to its major tributaries during and after the Spanish colonial era. In 2010, 55 sites and five existing UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the Mexican section of the route were collectively added to the World Heritage List, including historic cities, towns, bridges, haciendas and other monuments along the route between the Historic Center of Mexico City (an independent World Heritage Site) and the town of Valle de Allende, Chihuahua. Point of Rocks, named by the Spanish ''Cerros del Perrillo'' (Hills of the Doggy), is a 5,115 foot / 1,559 meter summit and the name of a range of hills of which the summit is the highest. The summit and the hills are in the Jornada del Muerto plateau, mostly in Sierra County, New Mexico. The southernmost part of the hills are within Doña Ana County, New Mexico. History Point of Rocks was a landmark along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro that passed to the west of these hills. Nearby to the south were two waterholes and a camping place, one of the few reliable watering places along the route known as the Jornada del Muerto. The place was called the Paraje del Perrillo (Place of the Little Dog). Caja del Rio (Spanish: "box of the river") is a dissected plateau, of volcanic origin, which covers approximately 84,000 acres of land in northern Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States. The region is also known as the Caja, Caja del Rio Plateau, and Cerros del Rio. The center of the area is approximately 15 miles (23 km) west of Santa Fe, New Mexico. San Acacia is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place in Socorro County, New Mexico, United States. It was once a prosperous railway town, but is now largely deserted. There is a nearby diversion dam on the Rio Grande, important in irrigation. Location The village lies on the Rio Grande in the Albuquerque Basin. The village is south of Bernardo and north of Socorro. It is off Interstate 25 at exit 163. San Acacia is near the southern boundary of the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge.
