Camille Van Camp
Camille van Camp (3 June 1834, Tongeren - 16 November 1891, Montreux) was a Belgian portrait and landscape painter, watercolorist, and engraver. Life and work His father was a lawyer; originally from Antwerp. From 1848 to 1853, he studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles with François-Joseph Navez, Louis Gallait and . He paid a visit to Florence in 1857, where he copied the Old Masters at the Uffizi. Two years later, he did the same thing at the Louvre in Paris. In 1863, he and his friend, Hippolyte Boulenger, went to Tervuren, the site of a flourishing artists' colony. There, he participated in creating a style of landscape painting that came to be known as the . Five years later, he was one of the co-founders of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts. Hippolyte Boulenger
Hippolyte Emmanuel Boulenger (3 December 1837 – 4 July 1874) was a Belgian landscape painter influenced by the French Barbizon school, considered to be "the Belgian Corot". Biography Hippolyte Boulenger was born to French parents in Tournai in 1837. He spent his youth in Tournai and lived in Paris between 1850 and 1853, where he studied drawing. In 1853, after he became an orphan, he went to Brussels to work at a design atelier. In the evening, he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts with Joseph Quinaux, a landscape painter. He met portrait painter Camille van Camp in 1863, who became a mentor and mecenas. He showed his first painting in the Brussels Salon the same year. Boulenger went to Tervuren in 1864, and called round him a group of likeminded painters gathered there, the School van Tervuren, a Belgian version of the Barbizon school, of which he became the leading artist. Charles De Coster
Charles-Theodore-Henri De Coster (20 August 1827 – 7 May 1879) was a Belgian novelist whose efforts laid the basis for a native Belgian literature. Early life and education He was born in Munich; his father, Augustin De Coster, was a native of Liège, who was attached to the household of the Apostolic Nuncio to Bavaria in Munich, but soon returned to Belgium. Charles was placed in a Brussels bank, but in 1850 he entered the Université libre de Bruxelles, where he completed his studies in 1855. He was one of the founders of the Société des Joyeux, a small literary club, more than one member of which was to achieve literary distinction. De Coster made his debut as a poet in the ''Revue trimestrielle'', founded in 1854, and his first efforts in prose were contributed to a periodical entitled ''Uylenspiegel'' (founded 1856). The Société Libre des Beaux-Arts ("Free Society of Fine Arts") was an organization formed in 1868 by Belgian artists to react against academicism and to advance Realist painting and artistic freedom. Based in Brussels, the society was active until 1876, by which time the aesthetic values it espoused had infiltrated the official Salon. It played a formative role in establishing avant-gardism in Belgium. History The first exhibition of the Free Society was held in 1868 to provide an alternative art space beyond the Salon. Tervuren
Tervuren () is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in Flanders, Belgium. The municipality comprises the villages of Duisburg, Tervuren, Vossem and Moorsel. On January 1, 2006, Tervuren had a total population of 20,636. The total area is 32.92 km², which gives it a population density of 627 inhabitants per km². The official language of Tervuren is Dutch. Local minorities consist primarily of French speakers and nationals of many countries of the European Union, the USA, and Canada.
