Camiguin Hanging Parrot
The Camiguin hanging parrot (''Loriculus camiguinensis'') is a hanging parrot endemic to the Philippine island of Camiguin, where its habitat is diminishing. The taxonomy of this population of parrots on Camiguin is uncertain. Description The Camiguin hanging parrot is mostly green with blue throat, face and thighs, and a red tail and red crown. Males and female birds look identical, which is unusual for a hanging parrot native to the Philippines. Only the males of all the other populations living on other islands have a red area on their fronts. Hanging Parrot
Hanging parrots are birds in the genus ''Loriculus'', a group of small parrots from tropical southern Asia. About long, hanging parrots are mostly green plumaged and short-tailed. Often head coloring helps to identify individual species. They are unique among birds for their ability to sleep upside down. Taxonomy The genus ''Loriculus'' was introduced in 1849 by the English zoologist Edward Blyth for the blue-crowned hanging parrot. The name is a diminutive of the genus ''Lorius'' that was introduced by Nicholas Aylward Vigors for the lorys in 1825. Camiguin, officially the Province of Camiguin ( ceb, Probinsya sa Camiguin; tl, Lalawigan ng Camiguin; Kamigin: ''Probinsya ta Kamigin''), is an island province in the Philippines located in the Bohol Sea, about off the northern coast of Mindanao.
