Cameron Lake (British Columbia)
Cameron Lake is a lake in central Vancouver Island located 15 km east of Port Alberni, on the north side of Highway 4. It has an area of 477 hectares and an elevation of 184 metres above sea level. The lake is between Mount Arrowsmith to the south and Mount Wesley to the north. The lake was named by Captain Richards in 1860 for David Cameron, the first Chief Justice of Vancouver Island. The entire southern shore of the lake is incorporated in the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park A popular folktale is that a train came crashing down the mountain from the Island Rail Corridor, this however is false. Reports of peculiar sightings in the lake's waters and the local legend of resident lake monster, nicknamed Cammie, remain popular. In the summer of 2009, the B.C. Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is an island in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and part of the Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of British Columbia. Port Alberni () is a city located on Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Highway 4 is the longest east–west main vehicle route on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, with a total length of . It is known locally as the ''Alberni Highway'' to the east of Port Alberni and the ''Pacific Rim Highway'' to the west. Mount Arrowsmith
Mount Arrowsmith is the highest mountain east of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Its dominant rock is basalt. The mountain is contained within the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region and as of September 18, 2009 is designated part of hectare Mt. Arrowsmith Massif Regional Park. History The mountain is named kał-ka-č’ałḥ (Kulth-ka-choolth) meaning Jagged Points Facing Upward in the Hupacasath First Nation and Coast Salish languages. The first recorded ascent by colonists was made by botanist John Macoun in 1887. Macoun was a botanist to the Geological Survey of Canada. George Henry Richards
Sir George Henry Richards (13 January 1820 –14 November 1896) was Hydrographer of the Royal Navy from 1863 to 1874. Biography Richards was born in Antony, Cornwall, the son of Captain G. S. Richards, and joined the Royal Navy in 1832. His eldest son, George Edward Richards also became a Royal Navy officer and hydrographic surveyor. David Cameron (jurist)
David Cameron (1804 – 14 May 1872) was a jurist, merchant, and manager operating across the British Empire. He was unsuccessful as a cloth merchant in Scotland and as a sugar plantation manager in Demerara, Guianas. He became a Hudson's Bay Company clerk in Nanaimo, British Columbia and then a judge in the Colony of Vancouver Island. In 1853, Cameron became the first Chief Justice of Vancouver Island, a position which he held until 1858. He served as a justice until his retirement in 1865. Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, on central Vancouver Island, that encompasses the entire southern shore of Cameron Lake. Island Rail Corridor
The Island Rail Corridor, previously the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway (E&N Railway), is a railway operation on Vancouver Island and is the only remaining railway on Vancouver Island after the closure of the Englewood Railway in November 2017. The Island Corridor Foundation owns the former Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway corridor. The railway line is in length from Victoria to Courtenay, known as the Victoria Subdivision, with a branch line from Parksville to Port Alberni known as the Port Alberni Subdivision at in length, for a total of mainline track.
