Camelot (horse)
Camelot (foaled 15 March 2009) is a British-bred, Irish-trained thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the leading European two-year-olds of 2011 and won the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. On his three-year-old debut in 2012, Camelot won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and followed up by winning the Derby at Epsom and the Irish Derby at the Curragh. His bid for the Triple Crown failed narrowly when he finished runner-up in the St Leger. Background Camelot is a dark-coated bay horse with an interrupted white stripe, bred by Sheikh Abdulla Bin Isa Al-Khalifa. The colt was reared at the Highclere Stud near Newbury in Berkshire, where his "paddock playmate" was a foal who went on to be named Bonfire. Montjeu
Montjeu (4 April 1996 – 29 March 2012) was an Irish-bred, French-trained thoroughbred horse racing racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from September 1998 to November 2000, he ran sixteen times and won eleven races, including six at Group 1. After winning twice as a juvenile, he was the outstanding European racehorse of 1999, winning the Prix du Jockey Club, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Four more victories in 2000 included the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He was then retired to stud where he proved to be an outstanding sire of winners. He died on 29 March 2012 at age 16 at Coolmore Stud from complications related to sepsis. Pour Moi (foaled 10 January 2008) is an Irish-bred and French-trained thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In his racing career, he ran five times between September 2010 and June 2011, and won three races, including the 2011 Epsom Derby. His career was ended by injury before he could run again and he was retired to stud. Background Pour Moi a bay horse with a white blaze who stands 15.3 hands high was bred in Ireland by Lynch Bages Ltd. Pour Moi is one of many top-class middle-distance horses and stayers sired by Montjeu. Authorized (foaled 14 February 2004) is an Irish-bred and British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of the 2007 Epsom Derby. Background Authorized was foaled on 14 February 2004 and was sired by Montjeu, winner of the Irish Derby, Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1999 and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2000. Authorized's dam, the unraced Funsie, was sired by Saumarez, winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1990. Funsie is owned by the Irish jockey Mick Kinane, who is one-third of the partnership which bred Authorized. Kinane would go on to ride against Authorized in the 2007 Epsom Derby, finishing last on Archipenko. In a racing career which lasted from August 2004 until October 2005, he ran seven times and won four races. He is best known as the winner of the 2005 Epsom Derby, 2005 Epsom Derby. Ballydoyle
Ballydoyle is a racehorse training facility located in County Tipperary in Ireland. It is a sister thoroughbred facility to Coolmore Stud, and both are owned by John Magnier, son in law to the racehorse trainer Vincent O'Brien. The current trainer at Ballydoyle is Aidan O'Brien, who succeeded Vincent O'Brien (no relation) in 1995. The current stable retained jockey is Ryan Moore. History After the 1951 Cheltenham Festival, Vincent O'Brien purchased and moved into Ballydoyle, then a farm ringed by mountains near the village of Rosegreen, County Tipperary. Vincent O'Brien trained such household names as Nijinsky, Ballymoss, Sir Ivor, Roberto, Alleged, The Minstrel, El Gran Senor and Sadler's Wells at Ballydoyle. Coolmore Stud
Coolmore Stud, in Fethard, County Tipperary, Ireland, is headquarters of the world's largest breeding operation of thoroughbred racehorses. Through its racing arm, Ballydoyle, Coolmore also has raced many classic winners and champions. The operation, which is currently owned and run by the Magnier family, has been associated with a long sequence of top-class stallions since the 1850s, originally in County Cork, where stallions still stand as part of Coolmore today. Coolmore was once home to champion sires Sadler's Wells, Danehill, and Galileo. Guinea (coin)
The guinea (; commonly abbreviated gn., or gns. in plural) was a coin, minted in Great Britain between 1663 and 1814, that contained approximately one-quarter of an ounce of gold. The name came from the Guinea region in West Africa, from where much of the gold used to make the coins was sourced. It was the first English machine-struck gold coin, originally representing a value of 20 shillings in sterling specie, equal to one pound, but rises in the price of gold relative to silver caused the value of the guinea to increase, at times to as high as thirty shillings. Horse Markings
Markings on horses are usually distinctive white areas on an otherwise dark base coat color. Most horses have some markings, and they help to identify the horse as a unique individual. Markings are present at birth and do not change over the course of the horse's life. Most markings have pink skin underneath most of the white hairs, though a few faint markings may occasionally have white hair with no underlying pink skin. Markings may appear to change slightly when a horse grows or sheds its winter coat, however this difference is simply a factor of hair coat length; the underlying pattern does not change. On a gray horse, markings visible at birth may become hidden as the horse turns white with age, but markings can still be determined by trimming the horse's hair closely, then wetting down the coat to see where there is pink skin and black skin under the hair. St Leger Stakes
The St Leger Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Doncaster over a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards (2,921 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September. Established in 1776, the St Leger is the oldest of Britain's five Classics. It is the last of the five to be run each year, and its distance is longer than any of the other four. The St Leger is the final leg of the English Triple Crown, which begins with the 2000 Guineas and continues with the Derby. It also completes the Fillies' Triple Crown, following on from the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks.
