Camel Cup
The Camel Cup is an annual camel racing festival held in Australia. The race usually takes place at Blatherskite Park in the town Alice Springs, Northern Territory. The event is organised by the Apex Club of Central Australia. History The first such event was held in 1970 in the dry bed of Todd River between two Lions club members, in an ephemeral river in the southern Northern Territory. It soon became a part of the Alice Springs Centenary Year Celebrations. The popularity of the event was recognised by the Alice Springs Lions Club, and it started its annual celebration in the Traeger Park, but due to security reasons it was shifted to Arunga Park Speedway. It was 1979 when the race was transferred to purpose built camel race track the located at Blatherskite Park. Camel Racing
Camel racing is a popular sport in Western Asia, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, Pakistan, Mongolia and Australia. Professional camel racing, like horse racing, is an event for betting and tourist attraction. Camels can run at speeds up to 65 km/h (18 m/s; 40 mph) in short sprints and they can maintain a speed of 40 km/h (11 m/s; 25 mph) for an hour. Camels are often controlled by child jockeys, but allegations of human rights abuses have led to nationwide bans on underage labor in the UAE and Qatar. In modern camel racing, camels are often controlled by remote controlled robotic whips. Todd River
The Todd River (Arrernte language, Arrernte: ''Lhere Mparntwe'') is an Ephemeral, ephemeral river in the southern Northern Territory, central Australia. The origins of the Todd River are in the MacDonnell Ranges, where it flows past the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, Telegraph Station, almost through the centre of Alice Springs, through Heavitree Gap at the southern end of Alice Springs and continuing on for some distance, passing through the western part of the Simpson Desert, as it becomes a tributary of the Hale River, and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre in South Australia. The indigenous Arrernte people know this river as Lhere Mparntwe (pronounced ler-ra m-barn-twa). The Todd is in a very arid part of Australia and has zero to very low flow during 95% of the year. Traeger Park
Traeger Park (currently known under naming rights as TIO Traeger Park) is a sports complex located in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia, and is named after Alfred Hermann Traeger. The park was officially opened by Anne Catherine Smallwood (née Traeger) Alfred's younger daughter. The primary stadium in the complex caters for Australian rules football and cricket and has a capacity of 7200. The complex also has a small baseball stadium. Traeger Park is home to the Central Australian Football League, and also hosts the annual Ngurratjuta Easter Lightning Carnival.
