Cambridgeshire (European Parliament Constituency)
Cambridgeshire was a constituency of the European Parliament located in the United Kingdom, electing one Member of the European Parliament by the first-past-the-post electoral system. It was first created in 1979 for the first elections to the European Parliament, but was abolished in 1984 election. It was re-created in 1994 and abolished in 1999 on the adoption of proportional representation for European elections in the United Kingdom. It was succeeded by the East of England region. Boundaries 1979—1984 On its creation in 1979, it consisted of the parliamentary constituencies of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Isle of Ely, Peterborough, and Wellingborough. When it was abolished in 1984, the subsequent seats were based on the parliamentary constituencies created by the 1983 boundary changes. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. Voter turnout in parliamentary elections decreased each time after 1979 until 2019, when voter turnout increased by eight percentage points, and rose above 50% for the first time since 1994. Wellingborough (UK Parliament Constituency)
Wellingborough is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2005 by Peter Bone, a Conservative. History This seat was created under the Representation of the People Act 1918. ;Political history Wellingborough's earliest years were left-leaning. Between 1964 and 2005, the seat has kept on producing examples of bellwether results and rarely showed itself to be safe for more than one government term. Departing from this are two years where the result has defied the most common result nationwide, by leaning towards the Conservative Party, in 1974 (twice). Andrew Duff
Andrew Nicholas Duff, OBE (born 25 December 1950) is a British politician who presided over the Union of European Federalists (UEF) from 2008 to 2013. A member of the Liberal Democrats, he served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the East of England from 1999 to 2014. Early life He was educated at Sherborne School and St John's College, Cambridge. Political career He initially stood in the 1984 European Parliament election, finishing third with 22.5% of the vote. In the 1989 election he polled 8% of the vote, coming fourth, then in the 1994 election he came third with 20%. The constituencies were largely representing Cambridgeshire and at times parts of Bedfordshire. Melanie Johnson
Melanie Jane Johnson (born 5 February 1955) is a Labour politician in the United Kingdom. Early life Johnson was born in Ipswich. She attended the Independent Clifton High School in Clifton, Bristol. Leaving Bristol for London, she studied at University College London, gaining a BA in Philosophy and Ancient Greek (1976). Following this she moved to Cambridge, continuing to study Philosophy at postgraduate level at King's College, Cambridge. From the age of 19 onwards she was an active member of the Labour Party and for over a decade was a County Councillor. From 1981 to 1988, she was Member Relations Officer for Cambridge Co-op, then Retail Administration Manager from 1988 to 1990. Robert Sturdy
Robert Sturdy (born 22 June 1944, in Wetherby, West Riding of Yorkshire) is a British politician, and former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the East of England constituency for the Conservative Party. He held the seat from 1999 until 2014. Before then, he was the MEP for Cambridge and Bedfordshire North, from 1994 to 1999. Sturdy was educated at the independent Ashville College. Before being elected he was a farmer and is a former county chair of the Young Farmers.
