Cambridge And St Ives Branch Line
The Cambridge and St Ives branch (as it is named on New Popular Editions Ordnance Survey maps) was a railway built by the ''Wisbech, St Ives & Cambridge Junction Railway'' in the late 1840s. The railway ran from Cambridge in the south, through Fenland countryside to the market town of St Ives; more specifically, the line ran from ''Chesterton Junction'', where it met the present-day Fen line north of the River Cam. Passenger services along the line managed to survive the Beeching Axe, but with British Rail citing heavy losses the final passenger service ran between St Ives and Cambridge on 5 October 1970. Despite campaigns to reopen the service during the 1970s, the only subsequent rail traffic on the line was a freight service to Chivers in Histon which ran until 1983 and a contract to ferry sand from ARC at Fen Drayton which continued until May 1992. Fen Drayton
Fen Drayton is a small village between Cambridge and St. Ives in Cambridgeshire, England, and between the villages of Fenstanton and Swavesey. The village has a primary school, village hall, tennis courts and football fields, where Drayton Lions Football Club play their home matches, and a pub (''The Three Tuns''). The church (a Church of England) is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. The village is close to the A14 and the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, and is on National Cycle Route 51. According to the 2001 census, it is home to 827 people, living in some 329 dwellings. Cambridge North railway station is a railway station located in the Cambridge suburb of Chesterton, close to Cambridge Science Park. The station is on the Fen Line, which runs from Cambridge to King's Lynn. It connects to the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, and provides an interchange with Park & Ride and local bus services. The station was approved in December 2013; construction commenced in July 2014; and it opened on 21 May 2017, delayed from December 2015. St Ives railway station is a former railway station in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. It formed a junction, with lines to the east heading towards Cambridge, north towards Ely and March and west towards Godmanchester. It opened on 19 August 1847, closed on 5 October 1970, and was demolished in 1977. The site is now occupied by the St. Ives "Park and Ride" area. Cambridgeshire Guided Busway
The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, known locally as The Busway, connects Cambridge, Huntingdon and St Ives, Cambridgeshire, St Ives in the English county of Cambridgeshire. It is the longest guided busway in the world, overtaking the O-Bahn Busway in Adelaide, South Australia. Two guided sections make up of the route. Histon
Histon is a village and civil parish in the South Cambridgeshire district, in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. It is immediately north of Cambridge – and is separated from the city – by the A14 road (England), A14 road which runs east–west. In 2011 the parish had a population of 4655. Histon forms part of the Cambridge built-up area. Chivers And Sons
Chivers is an Irish brand of jams and preserves. For a large part of the 20th century Chivers and Sons was Britain's leading preserves manufacturer. However, the brand is currently owned by the Boyne Valley Group who make a range of preserves using the Chivers name. Foundation Residents of Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, since the 17th century, the Chivers family moved to Histon in the first years of the 19th century when John Chivers relocated to a house on the Cottenham Road there with his brother (William) and sister, and his three sons Philip, Stephen and Thomas all became market gardeners. Some years later the railway arrived in the village when a station opened to passengers in 1847. British Rail
British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was a state-owned company that operated most of the overground rail transport in Great Britain from 1948 to 1997. It was formed from the nationalisation of the Big Four British railway companies, and was privatised in stages between 1994 and 1997. Originally a trading brand of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission, it became an independent statutory corporation in January 1963, when it was formally renamed the British Railways Board.
