Calypso (Spiderbait Song)
"Calypso" is a song by Australian alternative rock band Spiderbait. It was released in April 1997 as the third single from the band's third studio album, '' Ivy and the Big Apples'' (1996). "Calypso" peaked at number 13 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, and it was ranked at number 23 on Triple J's Hottest 100 for 1997. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1997, the song was nominated for Best Video, losing out to "Feelin' Kinda Sporty" by Dave Graney & the Coral Snakes. Spiderbait is an Australian alternative rock band from Finley, New South Wales, formed in 1991 by bass guitarist and singer Janet English, drummer and singer Kram (musician), Kram, and guitarist Damian Whitty. In 2004 the group's cover version of the 1930s Lead Belly song "Black Betty" reached number one on the ARIA Charts, ARIA Singles Chart. They have five top 20 albums: ''The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake'' (1995), ''Ivy and the Big Apples'' (1996), ''Grand Slam (Spiderbait album), Grand Slam'' (1999), ''Tonight Alright'' (2004), and ''Greatest Hits (Spiderbait album), Greatest Hits'' (2005). Triple J Hottest 100, 1997
The 1997 Triple J Hottest 100, was a countdown of the most popular songs of the year, according to listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J, and was broadcast on Australia Day 1998. A CD featuring 31 of the songs was released. A countdown of the videos of most of the songs was also shown on the ABC music series '' Rage''. The most popular song was announced by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, the namesake of the winning group. Joseph Donald Mascis Jr. ( ; born December 10, 1965), better known as J Mascis, is an American musician who is the singer, guitarist and main songwriter for the alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr. He has also released several albums as a solo artist and played drums and guitar on other projects. His most recent solo album, ''Elastic Days'', was released in November 2018. He was ranked number 86 in a ''Rolling Stone'' list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists", and number 5 in a similar list for ''Spin'' magazine in 2012. Blitzkrieg Bop is a song by American punk rock band, Ramones, released in February 1976 as their debut single in the United States. It appeared as the opening track on the band's debut album, '' Ramones'', released two months later. The song, whose composition was credited to the band as a whole, was written by drummer Tommy Ramone (music and lyrics) and bassist Dee Dee Ramone (lyrics). The song is popular at some sporting events where its' iconic chant of "Hey! Ho! Let's go!" is sometimes used as a rallying cry.
